Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

There were some extra tables set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. If you wanted to get away from the crowd, or stake out a spot to talk to folks, these spots would be where to go!

"Brilliant scientist guy who got superpowers, made a whole lot of bad choices, tried to take over the world, and got punched in the face a lot for his troubles," Jessica explained. "At least in my world. If you ignore the mistakes and going evil, he did a lot of groundbreaking work in exploring alternate realities that nobody else was able to figure out or keep up with."

"There's superpowers in your world?" Yeah, sorry, Olive stopped listening after that part. "Wait, what?"

Bye bye, reputation as one of the chosen few normal friends, Jessica. You were so close.

She was a much less normal friend than Olive would ever know. Unless she found out that Jess had powers. Which was distressingly likely for anyone she even know.

"Your world doesn't have them?" Jessica asked. "That's moving up on the list of first questions I should ask people. 'What's your name? What bands do you like? Do people have superpowers where you come from?'"

"Olive Penderghast, I listen to a little bit of everything," lies, she mostly listened to Natasha Beddingfield on repeat, still, because that song was like herpes in that it would go away but it always, always came back, "and no, no one has powers in my world. Not unless you count amazing powers of bitchiness, in which case I know about three girls back home who qualify."

"That's not superpowers. That's regular high school," Jessica joked.

"I dunno," Olive said. "They're like in the gifted and talented bitches program. I would totally buy that these girls got bitten by radioactive Kardashians or something."

"So you have to deal with alternate realities and a big sister from the turn of last century, but you don't have to deal with them," Jessica reasoned. "Sounds like an even trade."

"To be fair, I think this is why I'm coping like a billion times worse than you," Olive pointed out.

"I'm just a science nerd from a place with superpowers, so crazy stuff seems more natural," Jessica said. "Who knew that would ever be useful?"

"More of an English nerd, personally," Olive said, shaking her head. "Damn my lack of scientific aptitude. When will my ability to conjugate properly ever come in handy?"

Plenty of places, Olive. Plenty. How dare you.

"Let's make a deal. You ever need science help, let me know. If I ever need to know if Jane Austen's last name as an 'e' or an 'i' and I'll bug you," Jessica said. She was teasing an admitted nerd. It made her feel powerful. Well, not really.

"Deal," Olive agreed. "And it's an 'e.' Though 'Jane Austin' with an 'i' would be an awesome retelling of her life set in modern-day Texas."

"Okay, that right there is how you use your English nerdiness in the real world," Jessica offered. "You know the rewrites with zombies and stuff? You can rewrite her works to take place in Texas. I'm pretty sure you can mostly just add random 'y'alls' and. Then make all the money and buy your own helicopter."

"I'll just put everyone in cowboy hats instead of bonnets," Olive mused. "It's brilliant. And I could use a helicopter."

"Of course you could, everyone could," Jessica said. "Since I suggested the idea, I can borrow the helicopter, right?"

"I will even let you borrow the yacht I'm going to buy when I start getting popular enough to have ghostwriters," Olive promised.

"I knew I liked you for some reason. Any friend who lets people borrow yachts is a friend I want to have," Jessica said.

"Just don't go too crazy," Olive cautioned. "No shipwrecks. No three-hour tours. I have my limits."

"You didn't mention smuggling. So I know what I'll be using it for now," Jessica joked.

"Smuggling is okay as long as I get a cut," Olive decided.

"I think fifteen percent is standard for that kind of thing. Not a problem," Jessica said.

"Twenty," Olive countered.

"I guess I can't really complain. It's your yacht," Jessica acquiesced.

"Awesome. I should've gone for twenty-five," Olive declared. "What are we smuggling?"

"Honestly? I haven't given much thought to it yet. We have time to plan before you're super rich," Jessica said.
