Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

There were some extra tables set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. If you wanted to get away from the crowd, or stake out a spot to talk to folks, these spots would be where to go!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Darcy was lounging on the lawn, people watching with a camera and a smile. She had been there a while, she was allowed to be amused by all the confused new kids.

It had been Fawn's intention to come down, grab some food, and then retreat fleetly back to her room, but once she got down to the picnic, it seemed like such a nice day that it would be a shame to squander it entirely. She decided to enjoy it, just a little bit, by finding a quiet spot under a tree to eat her sandwich and people-watch for a little bit.

Then it would be back to hermitude.

After her encounter with the Kingslayer, Dany had been tempted to run away and hide in her room for the rest of the picnic. Perhaps there could be the ice cream that Petra had promised. Or, more likely, perhaps she could get a generous head-start on that ice cream as she ruminated on her own fate and the Lannister's words.

But then she had found a Baratheon who called her "your grace," and all the world had seemed brighter again. And besides, she had many friends to see yet. She had been gone a long, long summer. No monsters of her childhood would chase her away from happiness today.

So, she found a spot under a tree where she sat with her dragons, her silken skirts spread out around her as she looked about for familiar faces. There were still a few with whom she sought audience, yet.

So far, Olive had flirted -- she shouldn't have, but she did -- and made something like a couple of friends, and found herself a human shield.

And, you know, been told about time travel and intergalactic existence and stuff. But let's focus on the parts that weren't making her head hurt.

She was trying to ignore the temptation to just sit on a picnic table and stare at her phone. Instead, she sat on a picnic table and...picked at some grapes while people-watching. She'd had kind of a busy day so far. She could take a breather, 'kay thanks.

Okay. So, as it turned out, high school here wasn't as bad as it was at Midtown. Maybe it was because there weren't any Flash Thompsons. Maybe it was that Jessica was a girl - unlike in her memories - and high school was somehow easier for them. (It didn't seem likely, but hey, just testing out hypotheses.) Or maybe it was because everything else was completely insane so why COULDN'T classmates actually be nice and helpful? Why would the crazy stop right before that point.

So if Jess looked a little more relaxed now, well, it's because she kind of was.

"I don't know if you know this, but we're in a crazy place with crazy people," Jessica said, moving to a seat by Olive.

"I met a guy from another galaxy and my big sibling is from 1915 and has a baby," Olive answered. "So yeah, I clued in. This normal-seeming girl I met says we're not all on drugs, though. That was my first thought."

"My big sib has dragons. Three of them," Jessica said, holding up three fingers for emphasis. "And everyone knows that crazy things happen here. We're doomed to crazy, Olive. Doomed."

"Holy crap, dragons?" She'd totally seen some girl in a pink nightgown with a bunch of lizards or whatever, but that whole setup just seemed to scream BAG OF CRAZY so she'd avoided it. "Yeah, mine just has that baby that she says isn't hers, but, you know." Olive rolled her eyes. "We're like, super-doomed. There's other normal people here, though! I met a couple of them!"

By now, Hanna was relaxing under a tree. She was sipping soda as she looked around at her surroundings, curiously watching the crowd more than anything.

Pinkie Pie was doing cartwheels by the food table.

Watch out, those hooves could be lethal.

Jessica actually felt a little bad for Olive if she was being counted as a normal person. At least she hadn't immediately revealed that she had a secret identity, though.

"I think a baby might actually beat dragons. Which is the first time that's been said, I think," Jessica said. "I met a few, too, who I think are even more normal than me." Again, not tough, outside of her cover.

Ryan was glad that it wasn't unbearably hot today. She felt sometimes as though the intense heat this summer was trying to kill her. For now, she was going to sip a diet soda and keep a watchful eye out for people trying to scare the newbies.

Victor closed his eyes as he took a seat on a picnic bench, just to get his bearings. The whole idea there was some guy out there somewhere who looked like him was not sitting well with him.

Probably it was a weird coincidence. Almost certainly it was a weird coincidence. But if it wasn't, if he was wrong ... maybe all the work he'd done not to become the supervillain he was meant to be was for nothing, if there was some other Victorious-to-be waiting in the wings.

He steadied himself and went to get another plate of food. Maybe it'd all make more sense on a full stomach.

"We call that 'boring,'" Olive said helpfully.

Little did she know that all of the 'normal' people she'd met today came from...perhaps less than normal roots.

Olive had watched the guy for a couple minutes, and -- okay, maybe it was some of that annoying help-the-helpless instinct of hers, even though she'd tried to stamp that out back in Ojai, but anyone who looked that shaken at a picnic probably could use a hi, at least.

So, when he returned with his food, Olive wandered over and perched on his bench. "Are you new, too?" she asked, a little sympathetically. She wasn't sure, but if he was, maybe they could commiserate on the whole everyone's-crazy-here thing. (Or maybe he was one of the crazy ones and she was being an idiot, per usual. Even odds, really.)

"Hey, there's nothing wrong with a little boring to take the edge off the crazy," Jessica said. "I'm thinking of starting a book club for just that."

Even if Victor was having ZOMG I HAVE A CLONE trauma, he wasn't going to spend the whole picnic moping. He could get it together enough to meet some of the new people.

Like this girl, for example. "Hi," he said. "New girl, right? How's the first day in Fandom going so far?"

"Okay but it can't be like, new books," Olive replied. "Or ones with a movie that people might want to watch."

Stupid Demi Moore.

"Actually no," Victor said, glancing over. She got a shaky smile, and not just because her hair reminded him of Lillie's. It was an I'm-going-to-be-okay kind of smile. "Sorry. This guy I met said I look just like his best friend at home. I'm kind of ... getting used to the concept."

Which would probably be easier if he didn't have android issues about it, but Olive didn't need to hear that just yet.

"Anyhow, hi. I'm Victor. Nice to meet you."

"Olive," she said, gesturing to herself and mulling that over for a second. "That's...super weird. Maybe it's like that movie with the twins who were separated at birth? That'd be kind of cool." She winced, and added, "Sorry, it's my first day and I've adopted a sort of laissez-faire outlook on this whole...everything here, because if I try and think too hard about things like long-lost identical twins and don't contextualize it, my head will probably just explode. But that must be ridiculously weird for you."
