Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Gosh, that had been a fun drive. In the sense that April should never be allowed to drive anything.

It was possible there was stuff in her hair now. But she also had pop, which, by virtue of being caffeinated, improved her morning significantly.

She could still live without all the students, though.

"Nobody's chased me away yet," Jono mused, stepping up to April with a sandwich in one hand, a coffee in the other and no small amount of wonderment in his tone. "I think they actually want me here and teaching."

Either that, or this was some sort of very elaborate joke.

April, chilling on top of a table with a Diet Dr. Pepper, had to raise an eyebrow at that. "Dude, I just drove the bus," she reported. "And they let me."

"... Do you even know how to drive?"

Look, she just didn't seem like the sort to work up the get up and go that it would take to actually get a license.

"Sort of."

Sort of.

"Not well."

"But nobody needed to be taken to the clinic on stretchers once you arrived?"

If not, then it probably wasn't that bad.

Probably.

"Nope." Which was good, because April would be shitty in a situation like that. Like, really shitty. "I had leaves stuck in my hair when we first got here, though."

Jono was squinting a little and trying to puzzle that one out, yes.

"... Did you find a way to put the top down, or something?"

On the bus?

"Open window."

Duh, Jono. God.

"There should be convertible buses."

"If there were, you'd have students flying out of them into the street every time you hit a bump in the road," Jono pointed out.

And then tilted his head a little. Huh.

"There should be convertible buses."

She pointed at him. "Exactly." See, it was a strategic thing, really. Or population control. "Best lesson on seat belt safety there is."

".... Do buses even have seatbelts?"

No. No, they did not.

April considered that. "No idea."

In that case, it was possibly even more of a lesson on seat belt safety!

"Hm. Well, they really ought to, if they keep getting Fandom High staff to drive them."

He'd met the staff, thank you.

Pinkie couldn't believe she'd slept in on Welcome Picnic Day. It was her favoritest days of the entire year here in Fandom! It was the party!

She made up for her tardiness with even more enthusiasm as she trotted through the party looking for her newest teaching buddy. "Aaaaaaaaaaaaapril!" She called. "April Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuudgate!"

Oh good god.

"That's me," April said, taking several steps back, thank you.

That's okay, April, Pinkie would just several more steps towards you. "Hiiiii! I'm Pinkie Pie, your new teaching buddy! You've been here a little while, yeah?"

"Yeees."

A few more steps back. Bigger ones.

Oh, April, don't be a Derek.

Pinkie stepped forward again. Maybe April was leading her to somewhere fun?

"Well, that's great! That means I don't have to worry about warning you about all the creepy crawlies and weird events and things! Just make sure you're all set to start teaching!"

"Uh-huh."

April's voice might've sounded a tiny bit strangled now. Just a little, though. Even emoting by accident was still a lot of work.

"Yup. I am."

"That's great! What are yo going to teach?"

"Not doing things."

Or something. Look, remembering the name of the class took work, okay?

"Oh! I don't think I know anything about that."

"So I'm noticing."

". . . But if you're teaching them, aren't you doing something?"
