Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Although the summer had been record-breakingly hot, the weather outside today was actually kind of pleasant. There was a cool breeze blowing across the lawn, making the smells of the buffet wander, and hopefully enticing people to come over to the school and welcome all the new folks.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out as usual, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

This place definitely wasn't Iowa, that was for sure. And that, Jim thought, was a damn good thing. It meant no farms and no Frank.

Still, everything felt...a little slow here to him. Culture shock and time differences weren't really bothering him right now. Right now, he was walking around, eating an apple and trying to look for someone who might be his big sibling.

He'd ignored the nametags so he might be a little difficult to find.

After her experience with Stannis, Juliet felt like she was an expert big sibling. She had a gift basket in hand -- loaded with a Fandom High t-shirt, notepad and pen, prepaid cell phone, condoms, cookies, and a pound of coffee from the Perk -- as she wandered into the scrum of new students.

Of course, it would be a little easier if her sibling wore his name tag. She looked the tiniest bit frazzled by the time she ended up near Jim.

"I can't find my little sibling" she pouted in his general direction. "You look new. Do you know James Kirk?"

"And you look very upset about that," Jim noted with a little grin. "Let me help you out, I'm Jim Kirk. Let's not call me James."

"Oh, fantastic!" Juliet burbled, pout quickly gone. It helped that Jim was cute.

"Then, Jim, let me officially welcome you to Fandom High. I'm Juliet Darling; I get to introduce you to the island."

She offered the basket. "This is just a few things to help you get settled."

"You got me a gift?" Jim asked even it was obvious that she had. "Man, I'm so embarrassed because I didn't get you anything."

He had...an apple but it wasn't like Juliet couldn't go to the food table and get one of those herself.

"That's sweet, but you didn't need to," Juliet assured him. "This is more to make sure you know we're happy to have you, Besides, did you even know you were getting a big sister? I didn't."

"Of course I knew."

He managed to look serious for about half a second before dissolving into laughter.

"Okay, I didn't but hey, it's not the worst thing a new school could throw at me," Jim pointed out. Smiling easily, he added, "I mean, I didn't expect to get a gift either but well..."

He held up the basket.

"Sorry I didn't wear a nametag," he continued. "Just not my thing."

"We found each other," Juliet said dismissively. "Anyhow, nametags are kind of lame. I hate the sticky stuff they leave on clothes."

Again: Her answer might have been different if he wasn't cute and kind of charming.

"So ... this is where I ask you when and where you're from, and if your world has magic and other really weird things. My answers arenow, Manhattan, and not at all, by the way."

At least the question didn't really phase Jim? Or, if it did, he didn't let it show.

"I'm from Iowa." Which was a pretty normal start, at least? "But, I'm pretty sure my present is this place's future in about a thousand years."

Just an estimate.

"And when you say magic, you mean like pulling bunnies out of hats?"

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-08-26 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"More like people who can turn other people into bunnies," Juliet said. "Also aliens, and people who read minds, and people who are from these completely bizarre worlds where they don't even know what America is."

She glanced over. "Really a thousand years, or that part's a joke? I didn't know we'd still have Iowa and people named Jim in a thousand years."

"Hey, Jim's a great name, of course it'd survive for thousands of years," Jim protested good naturedly. "But, Iowa's still around. It's mostly stupid farms, though."

That's what he thought, at least. "I was born in space. Aliens don't bother me. People who read minds? That...might be bothersome."

"There aren't that many of them," Juliet told him quickly. "Telepaths, I mean. But it happens, so don't freak out, okay? And don't freak out about the pink pony who teaches, either. She's awesome."

Juliet loved Pinkie Pie.

"Where in space were you born?" she added. "That's ... actually really cool."
pursuedthestars: ([neu] just chill)

"Spaceship," Jim elaborated, shrugging. While his dad was saving the universe and then dying and blah blah blah whatever.

"Probably not as exciting as being born on a planet," he admitted. "Born in the year 2233."

So, it wasn't a thousand years in the future but it was a pretty damn long time.

[identity profile] twintuitionist.livejournal.com 2012-08-26 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know," Juliet said thoughtfully. "Earth's a planet. I was born on a planet. I don't know anybody who was born on a spaceship."

She noticed 240 years was not a thousand, but it was still, to echo the narration, a damn long time.

"And this is 2012," she added. "August 26. Um .... in the future, do you still have phones and texting and stuff?"

"...what's a phone?" Brow furrowed, Jim did his best to look utterly confused. "Never heard of it."

The liar. He was just teasing.

"A communications device?" Juliet said, totally missing the sarcasm. "You hit numbers and then you can talk to people or send them messages. There's one in the basket. The little tablet. "

It wasn't the fanciest phone ever, but for a prepaid smartphone it wasn't bad. Darlings did not buy cheap.

"Relax, relax," Jim said, holding up a hand and chuckling. "I know what a phone is, I was just joking around. Communicator devices are more my speed but I've read enough books to know what a phone is. Promise."

"I don't know anything about the 23rd century," Juliet protested, with a little laugh. "You could have told me anything."

As soon as she said that, she realized how it sounded and laughed again. "That's not a challenge."

Not really.
