All Across the Island, Sunday Morning through Afternoon

The time for a final strike had finally arrived. The prisoners of detention had been freed, powers and abilities had been returned, and all that remained was Umbridge, and her still-faithful Loyalists.

It was time to pick a side, and bring Umbridge's reign to an end.

Raven looked the girl over. Imperio'd, of course, as she had been. She'd almost have been sympathetic if she wasn't a nearly soulless demon now.

"And they will kill you as well, you fool," she said. "Their numbers are stronger and grow each hour, and their hearts are more dedicated to destroying Umbridge and all she built here. If you were wise, you would flee this place now."

But she couldn't, not with the spell controlling her, Raven knew that.

"I have to stay and help protect what I can," Elle said. "And I have to take out anybody I can, too. Because they killed my best friend and if I can't have the person who did it, I can take out as many others as I can."

Grief and rage mixed in her voice now. It was probably a good thing they didn't have the people in Detention still or she'd probably have killed a few of them just because she could.

Raven was siphoning off that rage and grief; it was helping her heal faster.

"Who was your friend? Who killed her?" she asked, idly curious. She wondered if she could break the Imperio on another person now. She also wondered if she cared enough to even find out.

"Cassie Blake," Elle said, too wrapped up in her emotions to be amazed at the fact that Raven wasn't doing anything to hurt her at the moment. "And I don't know who killed her. I just found her body in the library. I found it and I ran because I didn't want whoever killed her to kill me. She'd kick my ass if I died because I was stupid."

"You are bound by magics," Raven said. As she had been, and she felt her anger start to stir again at the thought of it. "If you beg for mercy, they may be sentimental enough to grant it."

She couldn't hide a smirk. "Or they just may kill you out of hand. Humans can be delightfully bloodthirsty that way."

"I don't need their mercy... do I?" Now Elle was just confused. Not fighting the Imperio, but confused nonetheless. "What would I need their mercy for? I'm just following the rules, following orders. That's a good thing, isn't it?"

"Human history would say otherwise," Raven said.

She made a decision then, and tried to worm her way into Elle's mind and break the spell that bound her. Mind control wasn't something she was practiced with, but if it was tied into her emotions enough she just might be able to free her.

It wasn't out of mercy. She just wanted to see how Elle reacted when she'd realized what she'd done.

Elle's powers weren't mental, so she didn't have any kind of awareness of what Raven was doing. All she was aware of was some kind of discomfort and then a snapping, way back in her mind, and then...

and then she was clapping a hand over her mouth and fighting the urge to vomit. "Oh, God," she mumbled. "Oh God oh God oh God."

"Welcome back to reality," Raven said with a hint of a smile. Her emotional turmoil was exquisite.

"I would suggest running for your life or begging for mercy," she went on. "Though I would not tell them how the spell was broken if I were you." Yeah, that wouldn't go over well.

Elle choked back the urge to vomit. "Why... why did you do it?" she asked. "Why did you do that to me?"

She couldn't find it in her to be grateful, not right now. Maybe later, after the horror had passed.

"Because I want Umbridge dead now." That much was true as well. She didn't do this out of generosity. "If I remove someone fighting for her, she becomes weaker. You were her tool, and now you are not. Though if you were to profess the desire to still serve her now, I would slay you where you stand."

"I just want to get out of here," Elle said. "I want to be somewhere safe. So definitely, definitely not here."

A pause.

"Thank you. I know you didn't do it to help me, but... thank you."

"Consider yourself fortunate I was in a generous mood," Raven said. "When next we meet -- if we meet -- you may not be lucky."
