Detention, Depths of the Castle, Friday

So, one of the important things to realize about detention was that the monotony of everyone's daily lives was part of the punishment. That meant that even though someone had died yesterday, the day's schedule didn't change a bit.

After all, most of your little lives just weren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

And that would be a hand being waved in front of Jono's face.

"Don't be offended if you're not actually catatonic," April said.

It took Jono a moment to blink up, but he did, turning his head just slightly in April's direction and raising one eyebrow.

//I was thinking.//

... In a very focused sort of way.

"Thinking like in someone else's head?" she asked, flopping down in a chair near his. "'Cause that person can suck it, if I'm interrupting something."

How sweet.

//Er, no... Just... thinking, thinking. Like everyone else does.//

With his brain! And thoughts! It was a very novel concept, really.

//Did you need something, luv?//

"Mostly just checking on the not-catatonic thing," April assured him. "You're... spacey."

//I'm the favourite pet of the madwoman who murdered a friend of mine yesterday,// Jonothon replied, after a moment. //I... I reserve the right to be a little out of it, today.//

"Sucks," April said... somewhat sympathetically. "Bitch is crazy."

Thank you, April. Eloquent.

//That's putting it mildly,// Jonothon agreed, lifting his shoulder slightly.

The other reason he had been looking at the door, aside from the fact that he wasn't going to miss Raven coming in if she did come around today, was because Bobby still had Sookie's body off in the other direction, and he couldn't bear to look.

//This is so damn tiring...//

"The way I see it," April said, gearing up for what she would call a very extensive speech but was actually probably going to be about a sentence long, "you're dealing really well."

Huh. A short sentence. Well, it still counted as a speech.

"Probably the sanest person in this room, I'd say."

//That... isn't difficult to manage,// Jono pointed out, glancing her way again. //Perhaps it has something to do with th'fact that I haven't had to live on th'food for the past three years.//

An attempt at a joke. He must really be desperate to not lose it.

"That would do it," April said at once. "The food is really bad."

//It looks it,// Jono mused. //How in th'world have people managed to survive on that gruel for as long as they have?//

Mindless chatter. Mindless chatter was so much easier to handle than stark reality, right then.

"Force of will, probably," April said. "Maybe some visualization. Like if I pretend it's a steak, I can... be very surprised when it drips off the spork and back onto the tabletop."

Right then.

"Visualization is crap," she explained.

//So I've gathered,// Jono replied, dryly. //Is it true that the egg... like... things... actually bounce? They stopped giving me rations when they realized I was just giving them to people who weren't getting enough nourishment, years ago. I never did get th'chance to see for myself.//

"Remind me tomorrow and I'll let you bounce mine," April said, and in her typically deadpan manner neglected to add anything along the lines of 'not dirty.' Why bother, really?

Really, it wasn't as though Jono was about to get any ideas. Not with Sookie's body on ice across the room, surrounded by people they couldn't possibly get any privacy from. He shrugged his shoulders.

//I imagine if it's hit the floor a few times, that can only possibly improve upon what you've got there in the first place.//

"Mmmm," April said with heavy sarcasm. "Egg with bits o' carpet. My fave."

//Assuming, of course, that they're actually serving egg?//

It was a bit of a long shot, wasn't it?

"Ugh, you're right," April realized. "God, it might be that disgusting fruit thing again."

Jono gave April a look. The sort of look that suggested that, so long as he'd been down here, he couldn't remember anything that looked remotely like fruit.

//They must hide the 'fruit' part under all of th'sludge?//

"You probably wouldn't remember it," April said. "It was black."

But decidedly fruit-tasting! She remembered because of all the horror.

//... What kind of fruit is...? No. No, I don't think I actually want to know.//

It would be all for the best if maybe he just never found out.

"Blackberries," she pointed out. "But that's not what it was. It tasted closer to banana."

HORRIFYING.

//Banana isn't supposed to...// Jonothon shook his head, lifting a hand to rub at one temple. //I'm almost thankful that I have no insides, right now. I think I'd be feeling decidedly ill, just thinking about it.//

"Wait, no insides at all?" April checked, suddenly distracted. "Dude. Do you even pee?"
