Detention, Depths of the Castle, Thursday

Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

Dinah had been watching with fists clenched, shrieking, unable to do anything, and now...

"Sookie," she stared at the other girl's body, then back at Raven, her face turning ugly. "What are you crying about?"

Raven cringed, still fighting the battle in her mind. "She was my...I...I did not want to...."

No, she'd meant to do it. She'd wanted to. Because Sookie was bad.

"So you're an incompetent murderer? Am I supposed to feel sorry for you? Sookie is dead because you were torturing her." Felony murder, some part of her mind noted. And Bobby... "And I don't think Bobby's going to ever come out, so way to go, two with one screw up. God damn you, Raven."

"I do not want your pity!" Raven snarled, her mood shifting again. She wasn't feeling it from Dinah, but she didn't want it from anyone. She didn't deserve it. She was wrong and bad and....

And she was Pride and would not accept their condemnations.

"I did what was necessary! She would not obey!"

"She was stronger than you ever were," Dinah hissed at her. "She died before she broke." Unfair, unfair, but right now she wasn't feeling fair. "Trigon would laugh at you if he could see you now, Raven."

"Get away from me!" Raven screamed, thrusting out her hands. Touch her if you dared, Dinah. "I am not Trigon! I am not I am not I am not!"

Dinah grabbed for one of her hands, as Dojima had done, rage making her reckless. "No you're not! The Raven I knew is dead! The only thing left is a puppet your father wouldn't even employ!" See what you did? she was thinking. See what she made you do! Umbridge Umbridge always Umbridge.

Raven's mind was a chaos of emotions, every feeling in the room stabbing into her brain. Fear would seize her for a moment, then rage, then hate. She couldn't focus, and through it all the demon, bound in glowing chains, struggled for control. But the chains were weakening.

She bared her teeth. "Let. Me. Go!" She blasted Dinah with a torrent of fear, her own and that of those around her.

Dinah's hand reflexively closed tighter, then snapped open as the fear got past her shields and nearly flattened her. She fell to the floor, shields slamming upward--

Then all the fear was her own, because Raven had four eyes and ohshit this was bad.

The Imperio spell still reigned the demon in, but not before she howled, "I want to be free!" The second set of eyes vanished, but the set that remained still glowed red.

"Don't we all," Dinah muttered, staggering to her feet. She stared at Raven a long moment. "Was that you who did that? Or Umbridge?" Sounding desperate, she asked, "Do you even know any more?"

"She says I have to teach the bad ones to obey," Raven said faintly. "To be like me. To use my gifts to punish them."

She hated it. All of her. The demon did enjoy the suffering and pain, but it cursed at the magics that bound it. But at least it could pretend. The child of Azarath couldn't pretend at all.

"She's wrong." Dinah pointed to Bobby and Sookie. "This is wrong." Exhausted, she leaned against the barrier. "You're all wrong," she whispered. And so was she, because she'd wasn't sure she didn't prefer that raging moment of Raven, daughter of Trigon, to the broken doll in front of her. "Raven. I wish..."

That Raven could fight her evil side and Umbridge at the same time.

Except that late faint hope had just died with Sookie, really.

"Wrong, wrong, wrong," Raven chanted. "All wrong. No choice, no chance. Want her out of my head but she will not go away. If she stops...."

She wasn't even sure what she'd do now if she was free. Revenge? Find her father?

"If she stops-- you should go somewhere. Else." Dinah bit her lower lip. "Azarath. New Gotham. Somewhere." Her expression hardened again. "Because I don't think you'll be safe here without her."

Safe around people, or safe from people: you choose, Raven.

"Azarath is gone," Raven said flatly. She'd felt its destruction over a year ago, but locked in magic and madness she hadn't cared.

"But I will leave this place. I will not stay."
