Detention, Depths of the Castle, Wednesday

The good news for everyone in detention was that there wasn't any sign of singing going on on the island today, so everyone could be spared from any further embarrassing admissions that they'd rather not have made.

The bad news was for everyone in detention was, well, they were all still in detention. But surely, it was getting easier to deal with over time?

"She might, soon," Sookie said, looking over at him worriedly. "I don't know how much longer she's gonna keep playing with me. She just wants to make me crazy enough to leave, and one of these days it might work."

Jack thought about for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "If you went," he said, "I would know you weren't doing it because you wanted to. But I hope she doesn't manage to make you do it."

It'd be the worst thing, he thought, to lose yourself that much.

"What kinds of things does she say?"

"It's not what she says." Sookie tapped her temple. "It's what she shows me. Usually Bobby or my brother."

She shook her head. "As nice as I can make it for people in here, sometimes, she can make it just that bad."

Jack blanched, much as he tried to cover it. "But that's silly, isn't it?" he asked. "Bobby is here -- at least in body --and Jason's safe at home. Just ... hold on to knowing it isn't real, when she talks to you."

even as he spoke, he had a good idea it wasn't that simple.

"It's easier to go away," Sookie murmured, already sounding a little vague. "You should do it, too, when Emma gets in your brain. Just hide, behind old thoughts and memories of what you used to have. They get tired of looking, eventually. Usually after Jason's dead in my head or she's threatening to go hurt Bobby in front of me, here."

"I'll think about Moscow next time," Jack told her, because that was about as recent and happy as he could go without getting Emma mixed up in it.

He started to babble, hoping it would be a distracting for both of them. "It's cold there. Terribly. But the sky's so blue, and the buildings -- they aren't western at all. And there's a girl there who was kind to me, once. I want to go back someday."

"Does it snow?" Sookie asked, flicking her gaze over to him. She knew what he was doing, and it was comforting, in its own way. "Russia, right? I'm more of a hot weather girl."
