Detention, Depths of the Castle, Wednesday

The good news for everyone in detention was that there wasn't any sign of singing going on on the island today, so everyone could be spared from any further embarrassing admissions that they'd rather not have made.

The bad news was for everyone in detention was, well, they were all still in detention. But surely, it was getting easier to deal with over time?

Phoebe's eyes widened and she tried to pull back from Raven. Why was it always hardest for her to handle Raven?

"I'm not unwell, thank you."

Because she was a fellow empath, a broken mirror reflecting what she could be?

"I saw Belthazor today," she said, as if Phoebe hadn't heard the broadcast. "He does not like you anymore."

That was probably exactly why.

Phoebe flinched and pain shown in her eyes.

"You lie. Cole would never say that. He loves me. I'm his witch."

"He no longer cares," Raven said gleefully. "Why would you think he does? He is out there, and you are in here. If he cared, he would be here with you."

"He is out there because he had no choice," Phoebe said, trying not to let Raven's words hurt her. "He had the choice between obeying her or watching me die."

"And he seems to be enjoying that choice," Raven said, idly studying her nails. "He does what he wants, eats what he wants...touches who he wants."

Phoebe swallowed and closed her eyes, refusing to look at Raven.

"He deserves to have some happiness in this hell we're all in," she managed to say.

"He is very happy," Raven said with a sharp smile. "But I could make him even happier. We are both part demon. We are so very much alike, a matched set."

No, not really.

That caused Phoebe to laugh softly. "You're not his type, Raven. He likes a little less crazyflakes in his women." She looked at her, amusement clear in her own demeanor. "I heard the two of you on the radio. You're not worth anything to him and if you try any of your tricks he will light you on fire from the inside out. You may be all big and bad servant of Umbridge, but Cole has dealt with worse than you in his sleep."

Raven shrugged. "I could make him love me so easily," she said, sounding bored. "His mind is weak. I could read his emotions without any trouble at all. Like how he became so jealous when speaking of Mr. Barton. Who is it that he wants him to keep his hands off of? Someone he must care for, I suppose."

Phoebe shook her head. "Just because you felt his emotions, it doesn't mean his mind is weak, Raven." There was sorrow in her voice and in her emotions, but it was sorrow for Raven. "I wish we could have met before all of this happened because you could have seen that someone being able to have such strong emotions doesn't make your mind weak or your body. Having no emotions is what makes you weak."

She tilted her head. "What of it? Cole has seen what happened to me, it's only natural that he feels protective of whomever has managed to give him happiness. You're not going to make me jealous, Raven. You'll just fail."

"You are not jealous?" Raven said skeptically, trying to push her way into Phoebe's mind, seeking out any thread of it to make grow. "Jealous that he has a soft warm bed, and a soft warm body in it? While you are here, cold and alone? I do not believe it."

"I love Cole, Raven, and that's something that you will never understand. I'm not jealous that he is free and safe and warm."

She was sad that she was afraid she was never going to see him again or that no matter how much she knew he loved her, there was the chance that he would learn to love someone else.

"So noble," Raven said, sarcasm dripping from her words. "So sacrificing. So full of faith. If only you could see what I have seen. Or felt what I have felt. You are a sister empath after all. I know you feel all the suffering in here."

"I do have faith in him and I can sacrifice some happiness while I'm in here if her has some kind of happiness." She swallowed. "You know very well that I feel everything down here and all around me."

"It was like that for me when I was first brought here, too," Raven said, reaching out to brush some hair away from Phoebe's face. "I felt everything. Every pain, every tear, every little bit of rage. But they would not let me heal any of it. You are not a healer. You do not know what that part is like."

"No. I am not a healer. All I could feel and still feel are everyone's emotions in an unending cacophony of sensations that I could not block out. Visions that I couldn't stop. Things that your leader has been willing to use to drive me insane."

"It is for your own good," Raven said. "Like it was for mine. You will feel better if you just obey the rules."

"I could never follow those rules and be treated like a toy or a puppet for whomever thinks they can hold my strings? No."

"You will," Raven said. "Sooner or later, you will. Everyone breaks."

She was proof of that.

Phoebe smiled coldly at her. "I've been here for years, Raven, and I'm still hanging on."
