Detention, Depths of the Castle, Wednesday

The good news for everyone in detention was that there wasn't any sign of singing going on on the island today, so everyone could be spared from any further embarrassing admissions that they'd rather not have made.

The bad news was for everyone in detention was, well, they were all still in detention. But surely, it was getting easier to deal with over time?

After a break yesterday for reasons, Savannah was back visiting the prisoners today. She was dressed in pink and black leather and was looking over everyone.

Eve whimpered softly when she saw Savannah. She almost wished someone else had come to torture her already, because then she'd be in too bad a shape to be messed with -- most of Umbridge's people seemed to prefer their people fresh to start with.

Savannah's eyes flickered when she heard Eve and she moved over to crouch in front of her. She lifted a hand and smoothed a strand of hair back from Eve's face.

"Now, mother, don't you think that's a rather rude reaction to getting visited by your daughter?"

Eve whimpered softly. "Sorry," she mumbled, trying not to flinch away even though she obviously wanted to.

Broken Eve was obviously very much in residence today; unbroken Eve would've snapped back, as she occasionally did. But not very often, not anymore. Not after so long.

"I had a visitor yesterday when I was minding my own business on the beach," Savannah continued conversationally. "It seems that Sean was sent on a suicide mission to try and kill me. It didn't go quite as he had planned, though. Apparently, he didn't have anything in his arsenal to combat a suffocation spell."

Something in Eve's eyes flickered and was gone. "So you killed your own brother?" Barely enough heat in the words to qualify as a challenge, but she was trying.

"He was trying to kill me, Eve. Wasn't that one of the first things you taught me? To fight back with everything I had?" She tilted her head. "Or maybe you would have enjoyed that, Sean killing me. In the afterlife you could have stood before Kristof and told him that his youngest son managed to avenge him, hmm?"

"Sean accepted you, Savannah. You didn't have much of a relationship, but you'd started trying to be friends. And then everything changed. So you'll have to excuse me for being a little surprised that you tried to kill someone who started out accepting of you."

"He tried to kill me first, Eve," Savannah snapped. "Were you not listening?" She tugged at a strand of Eve's hair. "I hadn't gone after him, even though I could have. So what would you have had me do? Just stand there and die because he wanted to kill me?" She brought her face to Eve's and spoke in a hissing whisper. "He struck me first."

"But... Sean wouldn't do that..." Eve sounded confused. "You're family. He wouldn't go after family like that."

Or would he? She had to remember that he was a sorcerer, too, and they were nothing if not ruthless.

Savannah let go of her hair. "Of course he would. He's full sorcerer and apparently he and his buddies on the losing side decided that I needed to die. So he volunteered to kill me because we're family."

"I thought... I thought he was better than that." Eve bit the inside of her cheek. "I thought he was more like his father. I thought he had a good side."

That would be one of Eve's few connections to reality breaking right there.

Savannah hated herself and there was no way that she could let Eve believe that Sean was dead. She just couldn't do that.

"Don't break your heart over it, Mother," Savannah hissed again. "His little bitch girlfriend rescued him."

"Well, good for her," Eve said, managing a little bit of her long-gone fire. "At least she knows how to treat her loved ones."

"That loved one threw knives at me," she said, shaking her head. "She's the only reason Sean is still breathing. She kept him from dying by his own stupidity."

"Your brother's not an idiot, he just quite probably thinks he's got nothing left to lose. So why not try? You'd do the same thing if your roles were reversed."

She reached out to shakily touch Savannah's face. "I taught you to protect family, baby girl, not to fight it."

She jerked her face away from Eve, careful not to show what a struggle that it was for her to do it.

"He's not my family. Umbridge gave me a family and something to fight for -- something where I can always use my power as I see fit. No bindings or limitations."

"And sends you to torture the woman who spent almost twenty-four hours to bring you screaming into the world."

"Torturing?" Savannah was insulted. "All I'm doing is talking to you... and every time you say that, you always add an extra hour onto the time you were in labor for."

"You know and I know that the talking won't last," Eve said. "That you'll move on to other things. And as the woman who shoved you out her hoo-ha, it's my prerogative to say it took however long I feel like saying."

Of all the times for Eve's spirit to return.

Savannah shook her head and cast a knock-back spell on Eve as she pulled away. "Now, you know that it's rude to talk like that to people. It's one of the things that got you tossed in here in the first place."

"I wasn't going to suck up to some crazy bitch and deny everything I was," Eve said, falling against the wall. "I'd never denied myself before, and I wasn't about to start."

But maybe she should've, a little voice in her head said.

"So being imprisoned is better than that?"

"At least I've stayed true to myself," Eve said. "I'm not lying to myself every damn day."

At least, not about that.

"I know exactly who I am and what I can do." Savannah looked at her and then smiled slowly. "I've been very true to myself."
