Detention, Depths of the Castle, Tuesday

Another bright, shining, and pink day had begun for the prisoners guests being held in detention, and while the morning started off the same as the day before, there was a strange sort of feeling in the air once people began waking up. A kind of... musical feeling, in fact.

Umbridge might have taken over the island, but the island still had a mind of her own, thank you very much.

[No, the barriers of detention cannot save you from Once More With Fandom Day! The OCD is up, so have at it!]

Raven was still too flustered to point out meanly that he didn't have a mouth. "I am treated well because I behave," she snapped, though her demon side was chaffing at its bonds. "Not that that is any of your concern."

//You behave because you're her pet and nothing more,// Jonothon replied, coolly. //And if that's all you aspire to, then I suppose that's for the best, isn't it? You can stay up there, perfectly happy to waste away under her rule, and I'll stay down here, the troublemaker. But at least I know who I am.//

And he was damn proud of that fact.

In fact, Raven, he pitied you.

"I am no one's pet!" Raven snarled. She wasn't a slave, no matter what she'd sung. She did this because she wanted to....

No, she didn't. Neither side of her wanted it. She'd been made twisted and wrong but she couldn't climb out of the abyss she'd fallen into.

"You have no idea what you are talking about," she said. She could feel his pity, and it irritated her as much as she'd tried to do the same to him the day before. She sneered at him, trying to regain her composure. "If you had a face I would slap it."

That was just petty, Raven.

It was, and it sent a quick thrill through Jonothon. Maybe he didn't have a face. Maybe he was some ragged, hideous thing. But that was the best that she had to throw at him- something he'd come to terms with long ago. And for all that she wanted to reach out and slap him, she couldn't.

At least, not with her hands, but it wasn't as though Jonothon was going to help her along by pointing that out.

//Sad creature,// he taunted, not moving, not taking his eyes from her. Still as a corpse, where he sat. //Sad, confused creature. Trapped inside your own head, doing her bidding without question. And you're not even doing it all that well, are you? You haven't broken me, yet. You can't have me any more than she can.//

"I will break you!" Raven spat. Her eyes began to glow red, and the hands clenched at her sides opened to reveal talons sprouting from her fingertips. "I will break you, and then I will tear what is left of your pathetic body into pieces. You will beg me for mercy long before I let you go."

//Please,// Jonothon said, sounding more amused than anything else, even if his flame-orange gaze flicked momentarily to those claws of hers. //Spare me. There's nothing you can do to me that's worse than what I've already managed to do to myself. Nothing worse than what I'm still doing to myself. Rip me apart, then. It'll be quicker than just letting me burn myself away, at th'very least.//

"You would like that too much," Raven said, her form changing even more as her anger built. She lifted a hand, red energy sparking from her fingertips. "No, you must suffer first. And I will drink your agony like the finest of wines. I will...I will...."

She hesitated as she caught sight of the back of her hand. Even in demon form the scars forming the word "obey" were still visible in her flesh.

//You will do as you're told,// Jonothon murmured, //because that's what she made of you. A puppet, screaming somewhere on the inside. I'm not the enemy here, Raven. I think you know that.//

"Do as I am told," Raven said, forcing the demon down, her chest heaving from the effort. She knew he was right, but the spell binding her was too strong. No matter how much she wanted to let her demon side free, it wasn't allowed.

As her form returned to normal, she found herself breaking into song again because Raven and Evanescence totally went hand in hand for some reason.

Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drives me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

Don't turn away (Don't give in to the pain)
Don't try to hide (Though they're screaming your name)
Don't close your eyes (God knows what lies behind them)
Don't turn out the light (Never sleep never die)

I'm frightened by what I see
But somehow I know
That there's much more to come
Immobilized by my fear
And soon to be
Blinded by tears
I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
If I will it all away

She began to giggle again as she finished. "You almost had me," she sing-songed. "You almost made me be bad."

And there it was again, pity. Pity, co-mingling with disappointment, with that nagging feeling that he'd been almost there.

But, mostly, pity.

//Do your worst, then,// he said, hollowly, //it isn't as though I have anything left to lose.//

Besides, of course, himself. And they'd already firmly established that she couldn't take that.

Raven shook her head. "No, no more today," she said. He and Dinah were making her confused. She had to focus.

"Time to put the toys away. We will play later."

//Well, I'm here if you need me.// Where else would he be? //When you're feeling up to slipping back into routine.//

And if he was projecting that pity a little hard, what of it?

The pity bothered her. A lot. It made her angry, and it made her guilty. She didn't deserve it. Hate was better; she could deal with that. But she couldn't shield it out, and it crawled over her skin like spiders.

"Oh, I will definitely be back," she said, trying to hide how much it affected her. "You are one of my favorites, after all. I cannot leave you alone for along."

//We should all be so lucky. Run along now, little puppet. I'm certain your mistress has some errand or other for you to run for her, in any case.//

And he would sit here until the next time, quietly revelling in something that was so close to a small victory.
