Practical Squiring, Thursday

"The Others take this heat," Jaime said, digging at his collar with his left hand. So, perhaps full armor with the slightly less white thanks to Fandom cloak had not been the best of ideas. But, a man had to look the proper knight, did he not?

Not even the wonderful cool air they pumped into the buildings helped.

"Welcome," he said, louder now. "I am Ser Jaime Lannister of the King's Guard and I will be teaching you the duties of a squire. But first I would like to know your name and house--" He eyed a familiar sigil for a moment. "If you have one at all. I would also like to know why you have decided to take this class so that we don't waste time on those who lack the commitment necessary for the role."

There was a fair number of girls in the class, which made the corner of his mouth turn up into a grin. Oh, the wench would have loved this.

"Who will be first?"

"I'm Alex Aaron," Alex said, "and...House of War?" If it sounded like a question, it was because he wasn't really sure if that was the information Jaime was looking for. He'd be happy to explain if need be. "I thought I should take this class because I know a lot about fighting but haven't had a chance to learn a lot of the sort of...more squire-y parts, and it's not like I have one. So. Yeah." Did that make sense? He hoped it made sense.

"My name is Cassidy and I'm from House Dharo." That sounded so strange to say. "I'm taking this class because I'm always looking for more knowledge to better serve my people."

Luke Castellan

"I'm Luke Castellan and I'm from House...Olympian." Yeah, he'd go with that. "I thought this class could be useful since I somehow end up in fights a lot and could probably use a refresher on the more technical parts of it."

"Squire-y parts," Jaime repeated, unable to prevent himself from grinning at that. "What do you mean by House of War?"

"Your people. So, you are of noble birth?"

Cassidy nodded. "In my world, I'm a Queen." There was no attitude in the statement. She was still cheerfully answering a question.

"I'm Alec Lightwood," Alec said, and gave a wary look around the room (and his Sensor) before continuing. "House Nephilim."

LOOK, ALEC, THE WORLD DIDN'T EVEN BLOW UP OR ANYTHING BECAUSE YOU'D SAID THAT. GASP.

"And I'm always interested in tactics and codes and that sort of thing."

"Anyone can teach you to fight. A common sell sword can teach you to do that," Jaime replied dryly. "Or perhaps a knight who isn't lacking a sword hand. So, what else did you hope to learn?"

"Well, my dad's Ares--that's the god of war, uh, the Greek god of War, in my universe and maybe yours too, I don't know--and I'm Phobos." He shrugged. "Fear Son of War? It's sort of an Olympian organizational thing, I guess." Why did Jaime make him even more babbly than usual?

Jaime was beginning to wonder how family houses worked in other places. Because everyone here was just special.

"Tactics and codes. I think you may need to speak with my brother if you wish to learn codes, but tactics could be managed."

"Another queen," Jaime replied. "I can't seem to go two feet without finding more kings and queens running around."

Shhh, most of them were dead now.

"There will be no consideration for your sex in this class. If you wish to learn, you must learn that few people care what you have between your legs when you hold steel. They only care to kill you."

"I'm Kate Daniels. Of House 'None'."

"I'm in this class probably because my guardian likes to think he knows best. I was a Squire of the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid for two years." She'd already proven her worth to a version of Jaime, but she recalled he'd had two hands when he was challenging her in the middle of a picnic.

Luke resisted the urge to roll his eyes and brag that he was the best swordsman in the last 300 years and didn't need those kind of lessons thank you. But he held back. Arguing with teachers never ended well.

Instead he just shrugged. "All the stuff outside of just going up to someone and stabbing them?"

Two hands made a man far more confident in himself, Jaime would venture.

"Knighted, or do you remain a squire?"

Cassidy gave him a serious look. "Sir, where I'm from, our people find a lot of pride when their women can hold a sword or a stick and defend themselves. I have never relied on my gender to keep me out of trouble and the day I do will be the day that my friends and family send me to a Healer. I want to learn as much as I can because to keep myself safe is to keep my land safe."

"A god. That sounds like something best left up to a septon to debate," Jaime decided slowly. Because the lad seemed well enough aside from that minor insanity. Reminded him a bit of Tommen in his looks... "I did always go to the Warrior when I prayed."
