Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

[Please wait for the OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here and there is more room for mingling here.]

"Hi," Petra said with a little wave to Miriam. "I'm Petra, and you're new, right? Would you like an umbrella? I'm handing them out so people can move around without getting their clothes trashed. I don't know if sunscreen rain comes out of cotton." She tilted her head a little and said, "I should probably look that up."

"Miriam," Miriam said after swallowing a mouthful of potato salad. She set her plate on a picnic table and waggled her glove-covered fingers back at Petra. "Sure, thanks. But why don't we find the guys spraying this crap on us and kick their asses or something?"

No, she still hadn't figured out that was just Fandom being weird.

"So, welcome to Fandom," Petra said with a weird mix of bright cheer and a little bit of caution, because what she was going to have to tell Miriam next was probably not going to go over 'sane.' "No one's spraying stuff on us. This is just the weather sometimes. Yesterday it was literally hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. Not that I tried it, 'cause that's gross."

"This is weather," Miriam said, trying to wrap her mind around that. What the fuck? "Riiiiiight. Am I being Punk'd?" She looked around and tried to spot the camera.

No cameras, but there were good odds she'd spot a squirrel with a newscap. "Nope. This island is just insane. Even moreso than the last island I was on, and believe me, that takes some doing."

"You're not shitting me, are you?" Miriam said. Either that or Petra was a really good actress or something. "What kind of place did they send me to here? I was trying to avoid the loony bin."

"I am not shitting you," Petra said solemnly. "But it's not the loony bin. I thought that at first, too. Especially after I saw Professor Pie. Everybody's sane--or. Almost everybody. It's just the island that's crazy. Just checking, what year is it where you're from? And is America a thing that exists?"

"Last I checked," Miriam said. "At least it did when I got on the bus. June 30, 2012. Obama's president, the Olympics are coming up in England, and some movie about male strippers just came out and I'm dying to see it."

"Oh my God I know, right?" Petra sort of gushed. "There's a theater in town but it's one screen and what they have is sort of hit or miss. Sometimes it's weird stuff. But we can go across to the mainland for stuff. But yeah, congratulations, all that sounds about right."

"Sooooooo . . . people sometimes give other answers to that question?" Miriam said slowly. Well, that might explain her roommate. "And they're not crazy?"

"Well, my roommate is the rightful queen of somewhere I'd never heard of before, and has three teacup dragons. Oh. She's not here right now, so I can't actually prove this." Petra shrugged, like, 'what are you gonna do?' "But...where I come from a lot of the media is...really, really different. And the companies, too, you guys don't even have The Corporation. But I think it's sort of like WalMart." A beat. "Only more evil."

"Holy shit," Miriam said, because what else could she possibly say to that. Dragons? All right, she could roll with this. She hoped.

"I feel like I just took a left turn into the Twilight Zone," she said. "I was expecting reform school and instead I get Barry Plodder."

"It's not a reform school," Petra assured her. "At least. Most of the time I'm pretty sure it's not. I didn't do anything to get sent to reform school for, anyway. It's just...crazytown, population, all of us."

"Maybe I'll just pretend I got a really bad batch of acid or something," Miriam snickered. "Huh. Well, I guess it beats a boring school, doesn't it?"

"Most of the time." Petra wasn't going to tell her about the time the universe almost ended just yet. "You don't have to take boring subjects if you don't want to. Have you seen a class schedule yet? It's full of fun and crazy stuff."

[identity profile] seeshowyoudie.livejournal.com 2012-06-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not yet, I figured they were just going to stick me in English and math and history and if I was really unlucky, home ec," Miriam said. She could dump a can of something on the stove or toss something in the microwave, but that was about it.

"So define fun and crazy. What do they teach here?"

Petra took a moment to consider what would sound more 'cool' than 'nuts.' "Well, I didn't take it, but last semester there was a class on disguising yourself," she said. "And in the spring there was a class on, like, crazy royals."

[identity profile] seeshowyoudie.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
"OK, that first one could come in handy," Miriam said thoughtfully. "And the other sounds like fun. And here I thought I'd just be bored." Maybe hitting the road after a few days wasn't going to be the plan after all.
