Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

"Well, my roommate is the rightful queen of somewhere I'd never heard of before, and has three teacup dragons. Oh. She's not here right now, so I can't actually prove this." Petra shrugged, like, 'what are you gonna do?' "But...where I come from a lot of the media is...really, really different. And the companies, too, you guys don't even have The Corporation. But I think it's sort of like WalMart." A beat. "Only more evil."

"Holy shit," Miriam said, because what else could she possibly say to that. Dragons? All right, she could roll with this. She hoped.

"I feel like I just took a left turn into the Twilight Zone," she said. "I was expecting reform school and instead I get Barry Plodder."

"It's not a reform school," Petra assured her. "At least. Most of the time I'm pretty sure it's not. I didn't do anything to get sent to reform school for, anyway. It's just...crazytown, population, all of us."

"Maybe I'll just pretend I got a really bad batch of acid or something," Miriam snickered. "Huh. Well, I guess it beats a boring school, doesn't it?"

"Most of the time." Petra wasn't going to tell her about the time the universe almost ended just yet. "You don't have to take boring subjects if you don't want to. Have you seen a class schedule yet? It's full of fun and crazy stuff."

"Not yet, I figured they were just going to stick me in English and math and history and if I was really unlucky, home ec," Miriam said. She could dump a can of something on the stove or toss something in the microwave, but that was about it.

"So define fun and crazy. What do they teach here?"

Petra took a moment to consider what would sound more 'cool' than 'nuts.' "Well, I didn't take it, but last semester there was a class on disguising yourself," she said. "And in the spring there was a class on, like, crazy royals."

"OK, that first one could come in handy," Miriam said thoughtfully. "And the other sounds like fun. And here I thought I'd just be bored." Maybe hitting the road after a few days wasn't going to be the plan after all.
