Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

Lex thought befuddlement was a perfectly normal first response to Fandom. "Well, the weather's kind of weird today, but I promise it rains water sometimes too."

When in doubt, talk about the weather, let's face it, here it was often relevant.

"Oh," Liara said. She sounded genuinely grateful. "That's good to know. I was somewhat afraid the rain might have been poisonous."

She paused briefly.

"...would you happen to know what kind of food this is?" she asked. "Is it levo- or dextro-amino? I'd rather not have an allergic reaction."

Lex guessed that answered the 'not from around here' question he was working towards.

"I was actually reading a paper on that the other day." Because he was a geek. "Pretty much all naturally occurring amino acids on Earth are levo."

"Thank the Goddess," Liara said, with feeling. "I've been starving--" Pause. "...It is acceptable to take the food, isn't it? I saw the other humans doing this and I just assumed... but it could be I was wrong..."

"Yeah, it is," Lex said, smiling. "The stores in town you need to pay, but buffets like this and things kept in the common room fridges and cupboards are pretty much free for the taking."

That was probably the first genuinely good news she'd heard all day. Liara brightened a bit. "That is good," she said. "I was on an internship-- I didn't think to bring any credits, I haven't-- Goddess, I'm starving. I'm sorry."

"It's quite alright, we can fix the money issue later," Lex said, with all the confidence of a teenage heir to billions. "But I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you didn't exactly plan on coming here?"

"No, I was... out assisting in an archaeology dig," said Liara. Okay, 'assisting' might have been over-exaggerating a touch. "I must have triggered some kind of artifact."

"You're an archaeologist?" Lex asked. "Must have been a pretty powerful artefact to send you here."

"...Not... yet," she admitted. "I'm interested in the field. But I'm only forty-five years old, I haven't even finished my secondary schooling..."

To Lex's credit he did not spit-take. Barely. "Forty-five, well, I turn seventeen in a bit under two weeks." Given the time differences, technically, he should have celebrated it a couple of months ago, but it was easier to stick with Fandom dates.

Liara squinted at him. "What is your species' lifespan?" she asked.

"It varies from country to country," he said. "But the current average life expectancy is somewhere in the late sixties, and increasing."

Lex intended on doing his best to use Luthor Corp resources to increase it further. Oh, youthful optimism.

"Oh, I'm... sorry," Liara said sympathetically.

"Well, it's not like we all reach sixty-seven and drop dead, there's a lot of variation from the average." Lex said, and grimaced. "Both ways."

"That is often the case with sentient species," Liara offered. "I think the turians have a lifespan that is only a few decades longer... and the salarians half as much."

"By the time we met them, we'll probably have gotten it a bit higher." It was an oblique a way to broach the fact humans hadn't really made much alien contact as Lex could think of.

"It's... strange," Liara said. "I don't remember us meeting any member of your species, but my omni-tool currently seems to be running a human translation program." She frowned.

"It might have been very recent contact," he suggested. "Or it's Fandom weirdness working in our favour for once."

Three guesses which Lex thought it actually was.

"Or the Protheans know more about time travel technology than we previously imagined," Liara said. If she sounded a little dreamy, well, the Protheans were really exciting, okay? "Perhaps they are responsible for this island... like how they built the mass relays."

Lex recognised the siren call of SCIENCE! "Depending on how much they knew about multi-dimensional travel, I wouldn't rule it out."

If they were responsible for the island, he would like to Have Words about their sense of humour though.

"They were a highly advanced society of scientists and diplomats," Liara replied, because where it came to the Protheans, she could talk for a century. "They are the ones who managed to adapt mass effect fields to increase the speed of objects to previously unimaginable heights."

She fiddled with her fingers. "I... am not an expert on mass effect technology, however," she said, "But perhaps this island could teach us more about where they went."

Lex didn't really get all the terms she used and he was more of a biochem geek than a physics geek, but he could at least make an educated guess as to what all that meant. "They sound pretty interesting."

Because that wasn't going to end in all the talking.

"They did so much, and yet we know so little about them," Liara enthused. "I... don't suppose your people have found ruins yet?"

She wasn't a physics geek, either. Archaeology. All the way.

"Not that I'm aware of, but my dad was always more interested in me learning the mythic side of history than the archaeological."

Plus most of the alien artefacts on Lex's Earth were Kryptonian. Not that he knew that.
