Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of large umbrellas set up for those who didn't enjoy a good pelting of various summer related materials. Because some people are weird like that.

There was also a splendid selection of food and beverages under a canopy to keep from ingesting suntan lotion. See? Your faculty thought of everything. Except how to make the island behave.

That you'll have to deal with.

"That is often the case with sentient species," Liara offered. "I think the turians have a lifespan that is only a few decades longer... and the salarians half as much."

"By the time we met them, we'll probably have gotten it a bit higher." It was an oblique a way to broach the fact humans hadn't really made much alien contact as Lex could think of.

"It's... strange," Liara said. "I don't remember us meeting any member of your species, but my omni-tool currently seems to be running a human translation program." She frowned.

"It might have been very recent contact," he suggested. "Or it's Fandom weirdness working in our favour for once."

Three guesses which Lex thought it actually was.

"Or the Protheans know more about time travel technology than we previously imagined," Liara said. If she sounded a little dreamy, well, the Protheans were really exciting, okay? "Perhaps they are responsible for this island... like how they built the mass relays."

Lex recognised the siren call of SCIENCE! "Depending on how much they knew about multi-dimensional travel, I wouldn't rule it out."

If they were responsible for the island, he would like to Have Words about their sense of humour though.

"They were a highly advanced society of scientists and diplomats," Liara replied, because where it came to the Protheans, she could talk for a century. "They are the ones who managed to adapt mass effect fields to increase the speed of objects to previously unimaginable heights."

She fiddled with her fingers. "I... am not an expert on mass effect technology, however," she said, "But perhaps this island could teach us more about where they went."

Lex didn't really get all the terms she used and he was more of a biochem geek than a physics geek, but he could at least make an educated guess as to what all that meant. "They sound pretty interesting."

Because that wasn't going to end in all the talking.

"They did so much, and yet we know so little about them," Liara enthused. "I... don't suppose your people have found ruins yet?"

She wasn't a physics geek, either. Archaeology. All the way.

"Not that I'm aware of, but my dad was always more interested in me learning the mythic side of history than the archaeological."

Plus most of the alien artefacts on Lex's Earth were Kryptonian. Not that he knew that.

"That's a pity," Liara said. "We know the Protheans were spread out across the galaxy at one point... I thought they could have come here."

She paused. "Have your people traveled into space?"

"Where I come from, we've made it to the moon a couple of times and have some space stations," Lex said. Which, hey, big accomplishment in and of itself. "But other people here come from places we're further along. It's that kind of place."

"...What kind of place?"

She hadn't actually been to an awful lot of places of any kind.

No, the island was only an awful place when Lex's dad was on it, Lionel had that effect.

"The multi-dimensional nexus where almost everyone is from a different version of the universe than you kind."

"Oh, that, right," Liara said. She managed a weak smile. "It is... quite overwhelming, isn't it?"

"It gets less strange over time," Lex assured her. "Well, slightly less strange."

"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself properly," he said. "Lex Luthor."

"Liara," she offered. "...T'Soni. Liara T'Soni."

Lex grinned. "It's good to meet you Liara."

"It's nice to meet you, Lex."

Despite the hesitant breaks between the words, she was trying to sound nice.
