Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

Evan was actually feeling kind of okay with this, by the time he went to put on his nametag. Only one person had really made a big deal of his face in the shuttle lounge, and it wasn't for the reason he'd expected, so he was kind of figuring he was in the clear.

He smiled a little as he stuck his nametag neatly on his chest, and then looked around to see if he could find his new sibling.

[Heading out for a few hours for a BBQ, but I'll be back again in the evening!]

Richie, after putting on his own nametag, was looking for someone who looked like an Evan or at least had a nametag that said Evan. He was hopeful that this term's little sibling wasn't invisible.

And look, he wasn't invisible! Just sort of grey. That was much easier.

"I'm hoping you're Evan and not just some guy wearing a nametag to mess with me," Richie said. "Hey. I'm Richie."

"Definitely Evan," he replied, smiling a little as he offered Richie a handshake. "I'm new enough that I'm pretty sure I couldn't possibly afford to pass up the chance to get to know my own, um... big sibling? I've never really had one of those before."

"I'm here to introduce you to the wonders of Fandom," Richie said as he took the offered hand. "Or give you the rundown so you don't freak out too much later. I'm available for freakouts at a later date if you need me though. It's weird here, so they give you someone who's at least kind of used to it to help out."

"I've had a pretty thorough introduction to the concept of weird already," Evan noted with a little smile. "My last school wasn't exactly what you'd call normal, either. But we never really had to worry about getting hit by falling popsicles, so this place already has that going for it."

[Sorry! Someone knocked the power out in my neighbourhood!]

"The popsicles are new," Richie said. "And the sunscreen. One or the other I could deal with but both at the same time is a little bit much, y'know?" He shook his head.

"Random stuff falling from the sky happens. And random stuff just appearing without hitting you on the head happens. And we've got a talking pink pony who teaches. Bet your old school didn't have that."

"No ponies," Evan had to admit, "but sometimes the cafeteria would decide to attack us all out of nowhere? And our Vice-Principal was blue and furry."

... Actually, a lot of people were blue and furry. For as terrible as his world was for mutants, it really did seem to have a think for furry blue people.

"If there was ever random stuff where it wasn't supposed to be, we'd just blame it on the Bamfs."

"I don't think the cafeteria's ever gone rogue." Richie shrugged. "At least not that I ever saw." Careful boys, you'll give the island ideas.

"What's a Bamf? That like a gremlin? They bite and the bites make you go a little, uh, crazy for a while."

That was just what they needed! The school turning around and attacking them because either it was bored, or the Shi'ar technology that ran the Danger Shop was a little glitchy.

"They're kind of more like... I think it would be easiest to think of them like little blue furry elves or something. With tails. They run around and they steal our stuff, and maybe they do bite, but I don't think people go nuts when they do."

Except for that all-important freaking out that happened because they were just bitten by a freaking Bamf.

Or maybe the Danger Shop would just get angry because that was in no way a silly, silly plotline, Joss.

"The gremlins are green," Richie said. "Not so furry. Pretty sure they run off with stuff occasionally though. Try not to get bit and if you do try and make sure nobody's got a video camera. Or a phone that does video."

If nothing else, at least Danger had a killer set of hips?

"Would I have time to check for cameras after being bitten?" A totally valid thing to take into consideration! "I mean, before I start feeling... weird, or whatever, from the bite?"

"Probably not," Richie admitted. "But I've never actually been bitten yet so maybe. Just be prepared and watch your ankles." Oh dear, Richie, did you just doom yourself to a gremlin bite?

Oh, Richie. Now you were doomed, weren't you? Dooooomed.

"I'll just keep my head down while I walk," Evan replied, smiling a little. "My ankles don't usually tend to get so far ahead of me that I can't keep track, at least."

Little mutant humor, there.

Poor, doomed Richie.

"Hard to walk if your ankles are off doing their own thing," Richie said. "Although I've never tried it."

"It takes a bit of practice, mostly." Evan shrugged. "And some really, really flexible legs."

Come on, who out there didn't wish they could be over here while their ankles wandered off to have adventures without them?

"I think I'll stick with keeping my legs in one piece. But if you want to let your ankles wander off I'm not gonna stop you. That," Richie said with a grin, "is not part of my job description as a big brother."

"I'm responsible for my own ankles," Evan laughed, "got it. I'll be sure to keep them where I can see them, if only so that I don't have to worry about being chewed on by little green guys."

"If you or they do get chewed on, come find me when you're recovered and I'll buy you a drink at Caritas," Richie promised. "That's in the job description."

And of all the things that Evan had seen lately, this was the one that apparently was going to blow his little mind.

"They let people our age drink here?"

[Bedtime for me! SP?]

Richie laughed. "At the one bar, yeah. Devil's Nest cards so I only ever went there when I was 6 for the weekend. They'll serve you at Caritas. You gotta deal with the zombie band as a tradeoff though."

[Works for me!]

"I think my parents would ground me for a month if they found o- Six for a weekend?"

There were some levels of weirdness that even Evan couldn't grok, apparently.

Richie laughed at that. "Yeah, it's a thing. Turning into little kids, or animals, or girls." Richie paused and shook his head. "I definitely preferred being six to being a girl. That was just weird."

Evan gave his head a slow little shake. Yeah, that sort of took some getting used to, even he would admit.

"I really don't think I'd handle turning into a girl very well," he decided. "At least I have experience at being six, you know?"

"I don't think most of us handle it all that well," Richie admitted. "I mostly hid in my room that weekend. It always goes away. So at least there's that."

"I guess that's a bonus," Evan allowed. "I mean, it's... weird that this sort of thing just sort of happens here, but at least it goes away. Does anyone know what causes it?"
