Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

"I'm responsible for my own ankles," Evan laughed, "got it. I'll be sure to keep them where I can see them, if only so that I don't have to worry about being chewed on by little green guys."

"If you or they do get chewed on, come find me when you're recovered and I'll buy you a drink at Caritas," Richie promised. "That's in the job description."

And of all the things that Evan had seen lately, this was the one that apparently was going to blow his little mind.

"They let people our age drink here?"

[Bedtime for me! SP?]

Richie laughed. "At the one bar, yeah. Devil's Nest cards so I only ever went there when I was 6 for the weekend. They'll serve you at Caritas. You gotta deal with the zombie band as a tradeoff though."

[Works for me!]

"I think my parents would ground me for a month if they found o- Six for a weekend?"

There were some levels of weirdness that even Evan couldn't grok, apparently.

Richie laughed at that. "Yeah, it's a thing. Turning into little kids, or animals, or girls." Richie paused and shook his head. "I definitely preferred being six to being a girl. That was just weird."

Evan gave his head a slow little shake. Yeah, that sort of took some getting used to, even he would admit.

"I really don't think I'd handle turning into a girl very well," he decided. "At least I have experience at being six, you know?"

"I don't think most of us handle it all that well," Richie admitted. "I mostly hid in my room that weekend. It always goes away. So at least there's that."

"I guess that's a bonus," Evan allowed. "I mean, it's... weird that this sort of thing just sort of happens here, but at least it goes away. Does anyone know what causes it?"

"As far as I can tell," Richie said, "the island just thinks it's funny to mess with all of us. I have no idea though. I just try and go with it. Thinking about it too much just makes my head hurt."

"That's probably the easiest way to do it," Evan replied after another moment taken to digest all of that. "I'm used to some kind of strange stuff, by most normal standards, but Krakoa back home couldn't change what we were. Just... make trees grow, and things like that."

That's right. The very ground underfoot back at the Jean Grey School was a mutant. What was Fandom's excuse?

"That sounds almost normal compared to here. Trees just popped up randomly or what? I don't think that's happened here." Careful Richie, you'll give Fandom even more ideas.

Fandom has no excuse. Fandom needs no excuse.

"Not really randomly," Evan replied, shaking his head. "The ground our school was built on was a kind of... hive-mind consciousness. Krakoa. So if we asked it nicely, it would make trees grow, or flowers. Um... One of the students peed in the flower bed, once. Krakoa got kind of angry about that."

As was rightly so!

"Huh. Not sure if the randomness is better or worse than a place that's actively responding to you," Richie mused. "I'd be worried if the island started doing what we asked it to." Because that would mean it was listening, all the time. "And I'd be really worried about pissing it off. What'd your place do to the guy who peed in the flowers?"

"I think it might have picked him up and thrown him around a bit? I wasn't actually there to see what happened. The student was fine, though."

So wasn't that a relief?

"Anyway, you probably shouldn't go peeing in flower beds in the first place. Especially when you know that the ground is alive. I wouldn't want to be peed on, either."

"Yeah, that's a pretty terrible idea," Richie agreed. "So you watch out for gremlins and I'll remember not to pee in the flowers and we'll be set, right?"

"I think that pretty much covers it," Evan agreed with a little smile. "And while we're at it, we can try not to pee on gremlins or get bitten by flowers, too."

Evan, you shouldn't joke about things like that. Think about what the gremlins might be biting!

"These are valuable life lessons we're coming up with," Richie said. "We should share them with the world."

"We can write a letter to the editor, if the island has a newspaper," Evan mused. "Announcement to all residents of Fandom Island. Don't pee on the wildlife. They probably don't like that."

"We could do a whole column," Richie suggested. "'Things Not To Do When Your Home May Be Sentient'."

"I think entry number one would almost definitely have to be, 'give it ideas,' huh?"

Evan was a fast learner!

"Exactly," Richie agreed with a laugh. "You're gonna fit right in here."

"Thanks," Evan replied, sounding genuinely grateful. "I really, really hope you're right."

"Of course I'm right," Richie said. Because Richie was always right, at least in Richie's own mind. "Why wouldn't you fit in? I mean, my last little sibling was an invisible ghost and we've got a talking pink pony for a teacher, why would you be the odd one out?"

"It's just that..." Evan hesitated for a moment, and then smiled and shook his head. "No, it's nothing. If one of the teachers is a pony, I probably don't have anything to worry about at all."

Yes, Evan. You keep on believing that, honey.
