Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

The list of roommate assignments (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AjS4JO1IqKXldGhZZ1hid09iNDFjV1VteVN6M0lTbXc&output=html) was, but of course, located in a prime spot on one of the tables. Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been ~~handwavily~~ informed of the change.

Alec had known roommates would be involved in this process since he'd spoken to Jace, but that didn't mean he was exactly thrilled about it. Still, though. He could be nice. He'd totally been nice in the past. You know. Once, or... or maybe twice. No, probably once. But he could do it again.

Even if right now he just looked a bit intense.

It wasn't that Victor minded close quarters. But he still had that only child brain, and after Tinny left it hadn't taken long for his stuff to start spreading onto what had been her side of the room. When he saw he'd been assigned a new roommate, he grumbled and climbed back up to clean before trying to figure out which one was Alec.

Eventually, he spotted a nametag. and wandered over, hands in his pockets. He didn't look displeased, but he also wasn't precisely bouncing with unrestrained glee.

"Hey," he said. "You the Alec who's supposed to live with Victor Mancha?"

"According to the sheet," Alec said. "Which I guess would make you Victor."

"Or a crazy stalker," Victor countered, before relenting. "But yeah. Guess one is right."

Alec looked momentarily puzzled -- his sense of humor was not other people's sense of humor -- but then relaxed. "I've never roomed with someone before," he said at last, thinking it was best to be upfront about that. "I've got siblings, but we had our own space. I'm not too messy, though."

He wasn't as hyper-focused on cleanliness as Jace was, but messes weren't really his thing either.

It was okay. Victor's sense of humor was special in that it often wasn't actually funny.

"I was an only child, but I was living with friends in a way worse place than we have here for a while," he told Alec. "My stuff sometimes spreads, but I'm pretty good at keeping it out of other people's way. I got here about two months ago. My old roomie ... I think she decided the school wasn't for her. I hardly saw her."

"So they gave you another one? That's unfortunate." Yes, Alec, it really was. "I'll probably be here for a while. My... brother already goes here." A slight pause. "Adopted brother."

"No, no, it's not a problem," Victor protested. "I just meant, y'know, I've been here a while, so if you have questions ..."

He trailed off. "Who's your adopted brother?"

Stannis supposed he should not be too terribly surprised that he might have to share his quarters with another young man; for the size of the town and the castle, there was a decent amount of people here on Fandom Island, and it seemed his lot in life to be uncomfortable anyway.

His amiability to the idea quickly faded once he found the list and took a gander at it to educate himself on his living arrangements. At first, he thought perhaps he had read it wrong, that the journey had made him tired and unable to see in a straight line, but every which way he looked at it, it still paired him up with the same, terrible name.

"No," he said, simply, to utterly deny that this was happening.

Miriam took one look at the list and burst out laughing. "Holy fuck!" she howled. She wasn't sure if this meant God loved her or hated her.

"You'd better not snore," she said, a shit-eating grin on her face once she'd tracked down Stannis.

No, but Stannis did grind his teeth, and he was doing quite a bit of that right now as he affixed the person he had hoped to see very little of with the same hard glare he had given her before they boarded the bus.

"And you," he finally said, "hopefully can find at least a shred of decency, else you'd better learn to sleep with one eye open. Surely, this is a mistake."

A terrible, terrible mistake.

"Is that supposed to be some kind of threat?" Miriam snorted. "Do I have to worry about you crawling into bed with me at night? If you want to sleep with me, all you have to do is ask."

Forget worrying about Stannis grinding his teeth in his sleep. At this rate, he wasn't going to have much teeth left to grind.

"Trust me," he grimaced, "that will be the last thing you will have to worry about."

He hoped that it was a mistake and that he hadn't been paired up to room with Miriam as some sort of attempt to have someone make sure she didn't make any stupid mistakes or stay out of trouble. If he wanted to babysit, he would have stayed in Storm's End.

"Lighten up, Stannis," Miriam said, using his name this time instead of the movie quote because that had gone over his head earlier. "C'mon, this is going to be fun. Think of it as some sort of buddy cop movie. I'll be Murtough, you be Riggs."

Stannis tried to understand that. He did. For about five seconds.

"Next time you speak," he said, "I advise that it be actual words instead of nonsense, Miriam."

"I think the first thing we need to do is bring your pop culture quotient up," Miriam said, rolling her eyes. "Your childhood must've been even more repressed than mine."

Arietty had been assigned a room.

How this had happened when she'd only arrived here by falling through a hole, she had no idea, but apparently she had a room, and she had a roommate, and there were beans everywhere and she'd wanted adventure when she'd left home, and she sure seemed to have managed to find one.

She found a cup to hide behind near the roommate assignment list, and peered out at the passing beans, trying to read nametags without getting spotted.

Cassie was a little worried about meeting her new roommate. Simon hadn't minded that she was shy and so she didn't know how a new roommate would treat her.

Swallowing, she took her name tag and affixed it to her shirt and then read the list of roommates.

"Oh, Arietty?" She read. "That sounds like a pretty name."

She looked up from the list so that she could look around for her new roommate.

Arietty peered around the edge of the cup when she heard her name.

Another bean! She was surrounded!

Arietty sighed, she could probably get away if this bean turned out to want to dissect or eat her. She slowly slunk out from behind the cup.

Her name tag totally doubled as a wrap dress, yes.

"Uh. Hello?"

Cassie looked around for who had spoken and remembering that she was in Fandom, she looked down.

"Hello? Are you Arietty? I'm Cassie." Her smile was friendly.

James had been a nice bean. It was entirely possible that Cassie would be a nice bean, too, right?

"It's nice to meet you!" Arietty called. She knew she had to speak up to make sure she could be understood by a bean as large as Cassie was. "You're not a biologist, are you?"

Cassie shook her head and then crouched down so that Arietty didn't have to yell.

"No, I'm not. I'm not even very good at science."

Arietty nodded. "So you probably won't want to dissect me, then, will you?"

It never hurt to be sure.

Cassie's eyes widened in shock.

"No, never! And if someone tries, I'll... well, I'll do something."

Even if something was telling Deborah before she lit them on fire.
