Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

"Or a crazy stalker," Victor countered, before relenting. "But yeah. Guess one is right."

Alec looked momentarily puzzled -- his sense of humor was not other people's sense of humor -- but then relaxed. "I've never roomed with someone before," he said at last, thinking it was best to be upfront about that. "I've got siblings, but we had our own space. I'm not too messy, though."

He wasn't as hyper-focused on cleanliness as Jace was, but messes weren't really his thing either.

It was okay. Victor's sense of humor was special in that it often wasn't actually funny.

"I was an only child, but I was living with friends in a way worse place than we have here for a while," he told Alec. "My stuff sometimes spreads, but I'm pretty good at keeping it out of other people's way. I got here about two months ago. My old roomie ... I think she decided the school wasn't for her. I hardly saw her."

"So they gave you another one? That's unfortunate." Yes, Alec, it really was. "I'll probably be here for a while. My... brother already goes here." A slight pause. "Adopted brother."

"No, no, it's not a problem," Victor protested. "I just meant, y'know, I've been here a while, so if you have questions ..."

He trailed off. "Who's your adopted brother?"

"Jace Wayland," Alec said, deciding not to comment on the obvious difference in last name. "He's... loud. Blond. Fairly caustic. You'd know him."

Victor hesitated, because you never wanted to be the one who didn't know somebody everybody knew.

"I recognize the name, but I don't think I've talked to him. Sorry."

"No, it's fine," Alec said, shaking his head. "He can be..." What was a nice way to say 'picky about the people he deigned to spend time with'? "Elusive."

Elusive. Really, Alec?

"Anyway," he said. "I should be an alright roommate. Let me know if you need me to move anything, and so on."

Maybe after he'd adjusted to the island long enough to be less uptight, even.
