Newbie Shuttle, Portalocity Terminal, BWI {Saturday Morning Fandom Time}

Miriam didn't much care if anyone saw that she was being dropped off at the terminal by the Baltimore Five-O, but she did roll her eyes at Officer Jackass for muttering something about dumping out the trash when he opened the back seat door so she could slide out. For a moment she was tempted to touch him to see if he had a nice painful death, but instead it was Officer Friendly sticking his hand into hers and slipping her several $20 bills and telling her this was her chance to turn her life around, don't mess it up, blah blah blah.

"Flying sucks," she said casually. She'd gotten good at not letting it show when she saw someone's death flash in her mind. "Next time you want a vacation, you should drive cross-country. It's a lot more relaxing. Trust me." He gave her a confused look and shrugged, then patted her on the shoulder one last time before climbing back into the police car.

The first thing she dug out of her messenger bag were her gloves even though it was way too fucking hot for them. There was no way in hell she was going to tell the cops just why she wanted them on or they'd toss her in the loony bin. The second thing was her cigarettes she could suck down some sweet nicotine before trying to find the waiting area for the shuttle to this boarding school. The glittery "Fandom High" sign made that easy enough. She claimed a seat and chewed on a thumbnail as she looked around to see who else was heading to this place. She gave it three days before she snuck out and hit the road again.

Stannis Baratheon, first of his name, was quite convinced that this odd place contained some of the strangest wheelhouses he had ever seen. And he did not much approve of them, either. His mood was not the best to begin with; that they should send him off to some unknown land for fostering this late in his life was both absurd and an insult. And now he discovers that they would not even be taking ships, but rather these unfortunate, cumbersome things. The castle was on an island. They should be taking ships. Stannis liked ships...

...He did not like these wheelhouses. He did not like this place. So he was mostly standing there, glowering in his Baratheon finest with his sigil (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m65jjg4H6b1rzoll9o1_500.jpg) embroidered into the black and gold. His fists were tight at his side and, if you listened closely, you could hear the gentle whisper of grinding teeth.

Stannis frowned at the young woman with the odd, corpse-like make-up, wondering where in the Seven Kingdoms it would ever be fashionable to go about looking like a bloody White Walker.

"I am not a king," he informed her.

"You speak very strangely," Stannis told the young woman, just so she was clear on exactly why his face might look so bewildered, deep furrows plowed into his forehead by his frown. "I have no titles, as of yet. I am Stannis Baratheon, of the House Baratheon, from Storm's End. Who are you?"

Evan was feeling a little bolder after a few minutes spent with nobody pointing at him and freaking out or anything, so he figured maybe he'd try to make nice with somebody else who looked about as out of place as he did.

"Hi," he said, scooting closer to the boy who looked kind of like he was headed to the island straight from a renaissance faire or something. "You're heading to summer camp, too?"

Well. Stannis certainly hoped no one expected him to adapt to the style around here, because, from what he had seen so far, he had absolutely no intention of doing so. His fists, as well as his jaw, tightened a little bit as he looked the other young man over.

"No," he said tersely, "I am on my way to Fandom Island, where I am to be fostered with the intention of discovering what my lot in life shall be."

A frown made his brows sink. "Summer...camp?" he asked, and even Stannis Baratheon managed to look a little wistful and curious at the promise of summer. Everyone (except perhaps the Starks in Winterfell) said it was coming... "Are you from these lands? Is it summer already here?"

"I'm from Kansas," Evan replied with a shrug, "but I was going to school pretty close to here, and it was still summer there. I don't see why it would be any different on Fandom Island."

A beat.

"Where they're having summer camp."

He'd pull out the brochure for you! Evan was kind of bursting at the seams with helpful intent!

"Kansas," Stannis repeated, frowning to himself some more as he made a mental note to procure a map of these lands as soon as he could. Nothing sounded even the least bit familiar, and he should like to have a good feel about the place where he would be learning, though he felt a twist in his gut. Was he hopeless to the point that he had been sent off to No Man's Lands, so far removed from the Seven Kingdoms that people did not even speak their names?

"It is winter where I am from, Westeros." Surely, the young man knew of Westeros! "And it has been for a long time, though there is much talk of an approaching summer. I am Stannis Baratheon, of the House Baratheon, from Storm's End. I have never heard of your Kansas."

"I've never heard of this Westeros place, either," Evan replied, frowning apologetically. "I'm Evan Sabahnur, nice to meet you."

He offered him a handshake, having successfully bitten back the urge to continue on by saying he was of the House Sabahnur or something.

... Wasn't that part kind of a given, if that was your last name?

Evan really didn't have much to drag around. A couple of days' notice meant that he really didn't have any time to pack, but that was fine, considering he didn't really have anything to pack in the first place. There was a bag slung over his shoulder with some clothing in it, and he'd gotten permission from Headmistress Pryde to bring the book he'd been reading along with him, just so long as it was still in decent condition by the time he returned to the Jean Grey School.

... Considering the state of affairs at the Jean Grey School, Evan suspected that it would probably be safer here with him than it could possibly be back there, tucked away in the library.

In any case, he'd found a seat in the lounge, and was contemplating actually getting around and introducing himself to people, or maybe just pulling out his book and reading, some more. Introductions at his last school hadn't gone so well, so doing the former was going to take some working up the nerve.

Food just so happened to be an excellent way to coerce a young mutant into being less wary and more social. Or, at least, this particular one. Evan gave Miriam a little smile, some of his awkwardness being tabled for the time being, as he nodded and inched a little closer.

"I'd love one, thanks. Are you headed to Fandom High, too?"

Look, maybe this airport just had random people offering pretzels to kids waiting under glittery signs, okay? It could totally happen.

"Hopefully not juvie," Evan decided, reaching in and helping himself to... one pretzel. She'd offered one! He wasn't going to take more than was offered, that wasn't how his parents had raised him! "As far as I can tell, I haven't actually broken any laws, so that would be a kind of rotten place to end up, you know?"

A beat.

"... We're not headed to juvie, are we?"

No, Evan.

It wasn't the first time Maeby had threatened to just pack up and leave her family. It was just that usually, something stopped her. Like Pop-Pop getting re-arrested for fleeing from the Christmas pageant.

She'd left the brochures out, she'd talked loudly about boarding school, and -- nothing. She was pretty sure neither of her parents had noticed yet.

It didn't bother her. Really. Really. It just made it easier to leave. And it would make it all the more amusing when one of them figured it out. (Someone who wasn't George Michael, who had been sworn to secrecy, anyway. It'd be hard for a bunkmate not to notice.)

Flying had been fine, although flying coach sucked harder than she had expected. She checked her phone when she got off the plane, and had no new messages. (Which was fine.) And now she was off to find ...

A waiting lounge full of crazy people?

"... the hell?"

"The glittery sign is a bit much, isn't it?" Evan tried a little smile at the newest girl to enter the lounge, looking up at the Fandom High sign that was hanging there. "I think it would probably actually be easier to read if it wasn't all full of sparkles like that."

Right, the ... sign was a bit much. Maeby looked at the ... weird Goth kid ... and then the sign. And then the weird Goth kid, and then the sign.

"Iiiiiiiiis this a costume thing and no one told me?" she asked.

The school had said 'nontraditional.' She had assumed it'd be like the school she went to in Boston. The one that didn't assign real grades.

And now Evan was trying not to look too crestfallen, glancing over his shoulder toward Stannis, and then at Miriam. There were plenty of people who were dressed strangely! It could be anyone making her look that bemused!

"No, I'm pretty sure it isn't," he offered, along with another attempt at a smile. "People are just wearing whatever they had to wear when they left for here, probably."

Was this actually some kind of weirdo school? Because she was trying to rebel here, not end up at Freak Central.

"Okay," she said. "There's something really weird going on with your face, that girl's doing the Goth thing, that guy's hanging out at the Ren Faire, and you don't think there's a costume party on. Am I in the wrong place? I'm just supposed to be going to some touchy-feely school."

Come drive the Fandom High Shuttle, they said. It'll be fun, they said!

Yeah, well, when Samus Aran though shuttle, she thought of something just a little bit sleeker and bigger and fit for space than...a bus. She felt way overdressed for this hunk of metal. To say she was disappointed was an understatement, but she could at least hold back her bitter hopes and not comment to the group as a whole that the feeling she felt now could very well be reflective of their time on the island.

Instead, she did a quick scan around the waiting room, letting her visor do the head counting for her, and then she lifted her gun arm in what should be construed as a friendly wave/attention getter. Believe me, if she had any intention of using it, you would know.

"Last call," she said, taking advantage of the helmet to amplify her voice so everyone could hear her, "shuttle bus to Fandom Island. Please board in an orderly fashion, find your seat, and remain seated for the duration of the drive. It's not a long one, so that shouldn't be difficult."

She waved the arm in a vague gesture that could be construed as welcoming/herding cats.
