Philosophy of Choice [Monday | Period 1]

"Choose," Ronan said. Behind him, in the Danger Shop created hallway, were two doors, identical save for a word on each: "yes" on one and "no" on the other.

Stepping back, Ronan gestured at the doors. "Choose," he repeated.

After finally making their way through the hallways, the students found themselves outside in meadow, no doors -- or hallways -- to be seen. "So what do you all think the point of this was?" Ronan asked, looking around at the class.

"To see how long we'd wander stupidly through doors until we picked something different?"

Sparkle made himself comfortable right there on the grass, thank you. Ah, sitting.

"I kind of wanted to keep going just to see if you'd pull out more Giants, though."

"There's some Cranberries in there, actually, too," Ronan explained, "and a couple of references to a Canadian group called the Arrogant Worms.* Rocks and trees, and such."

He nodded, too. "And yes, that is basically the point of it," he agreed. "Wanting you to see other choices -- to recognise that if something isn't working one way or the other, or if both choices before you are bad, then find something else."

"And water, in Canada," Sparkle replied, sagely. Because, hey, he was Canadian. And he liked music. Funny, that. "Really, it kinda takes an idiot to keep doing the same damn thing over and over again, expecting a different result."

He was reserving the right to laugh at anybody who had gone through many more doors than him by the time they wound up in the meadow. Just saying.

That was a good one -- he'd have to keep it in mind if he taught the class again.

"Now I think it was an exercise to see how many times we would go through doors simply because they were there and either start questioning why or what we were doing -- or simply refuse to open another door."
