Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yeah, okay. Sparkle totally knew what this was. The school babysitter program, right? To keep him out of trouble?

He rolled his eyes as he stuck on his nametag, even if it wasn't all that bad. It just left this sticky crap on his shirts, and he hated that.

... Right. Someone named Tony. Who the hell looked like a Tony around here, anyhow? All the guys and at least half of the girls. Great.

Tony was keeping his eyes peeled for a little sibling named 'Sparkle'. Which, to be honest, made him wonder if maybe she was a dancer at one of the bars that he most certainly did not go to with his friends.

Not at all.

Imagine his disappointment to find it was a guy. Buck up, Tony! Buck up. "Sparkle? I'm Tony."

Poor, poor Tony. If it made you feel any better, Sparkle would totally be willing to- Oh, wait, you were rich? Ew, you had that nasty 'money' smell all over you.

"Oh, so that's what a Tony looks like," he mused, offering the other kid a grin. "And you're the one the school drafted into making sure I don't burn the place down or something?"

"Sometimes with a goatee, I've been told," Tony added with a grin. "Everyone gets a big sibling here. But, if it's a worry, I guess I could carry one of those small fire extinguishers."

"Nah," Sparkle replied, waving a hand dismissively. "Arson isn't on my permanent record just yet. Though I guess that could change at any moment. Maybe don't go ruling it out after all, huh?"

"Safety protocols," Tony replied with a nod. "Gotcha."

Neeeeeerd.

"And do safety protocols around here usually involve running around with a fire extinguisher, or am I just special?"

Oh, oh please tell him that he was special, Tony. It would just completely make his day.

"I can't say it's been a concern before now..."

"What, really? No kid has ever decided they hated being stuck on this island so much that they just... like... took fire to the lawn or anything?"

Sparkle wouldn't. Mostly because he'd made the suggestion out loud, and it would be easy for Big Brother here to turn him in at the first suspicion of conspiracy against the system. Or something.

There was a long pause at that. "Noooo. I don't think that's ever happened since I've been here."

A beat.

"Wait, no. That Britta girl tried to burn clothing on the lawn, but she couldn't get her lighter to work."

She's the worst.

"... Huh. Any reason why she was trying to burn clothes?"

Those must have been some pretty shitty clothes.

And a really shitty lighter, too.

"We had uniforms for about a week." A beat. "It was a weird thing with the school board."

Sparkle's nose wrinkled a little at that. There they were. All his most paranoid envisionings of this place, coming to life.

"Uniforms. Great. I knew this was the kind of place that had uniforms. Let me guess. There's a curfew, too? And then there's the bus driver on the bad drug trip that thinks he's a grandfather with more 'greats' than God."

Great great great great great great great great Grandpa Skywalker, Dean of Students. And bus driver.

"...was if the guy in the red pajamas?" DEADPOOL, STOP CALLING HIM AN ALCOHOLIC.

Tony shook his head to clear it. "No curfews. If there were, I'd probably be in detention all the time."

A beat.

"I'm not even sure what people do in detention."

"Break rocks out in the yard with chains clamped on to their ankles, probably," Sparkle mused. "Mindless busy work."

You know. If you were in prison or something.

"But nah, it wasn't the guy in the red... whatever he's wearing. I meant that one guy with the hair."

It was nice hair, okay? Sparkle noticed.

Tony made a face at 'mindless busy work'. "Oh, the guy with the hair is Ben's grandfather. It's... complicated."

"Apparently one of the other new kids is like his great great great... add a bunch of greats on there, I didn't count, granddaughter. So yeah, I'll say it's complicated." Sparkle shrugged. "I mostly just figured they were from some shit small community and he's got enough money for some quality vanity work on his face."

Now he was really going to enjoy calling him 'Grandpa,' though.

"So, who's Ben?"

"...actually, that's pretty normal here," Tony said, looking around for him to point out. "My dad was here for a little while. Only he was from the 40's."

Oddly, with the same mustache.

That facial hair was untouchable. UNTOUCHABLE.

"And my mom's the tooth fairy," Sparkle replied, looking for all the world like he was completely serious. "My dad, Jack Frost, knocked her up in one of those big nests that the Easter Bunny keeps his chickens in at the company mixer, and here I am."

He raised his eyebrows a little. See? He could be totally full of shit, too.

JUST DON'T SAY THAT SHIT TO LOKI. HE MIGHT HAVE A SERIOUS RESPONSE.

"This place is strange. Really, really strange," Tony said with a sigh.

SPARKLE WOULD SAY THAT SHIT TO WHOEVER HE WANTED TO. AND THEY WOULD TAKE IT. TAKE IT LIKE MEN.

"People keep saying that. So far the weirdest part has been the band," Sparkle decided. "And maybe the angry talking cat back at the airport."

Yes. Yes, that would be kind of strange.

"Pink pony who is a teacher?" Tony suggested, pointing over at Pinkie Pie. "Or--well, I guess they don't look like aliens, but people with the last name Skywalker are from other planets."

With British accents.

Tony, now you were getting a weird look. Yes, even after Sparkle looked over at Pinkie Pie and did a brief double-take.

"... Seriously?"

"Seriously."

Sparkle gave that revelation the consideration he felt it was due.

"Maybe this place won't completely suck after all."
