Library, Sunday 04/01

The library had rearranged itself for some reason, Raven discovered when she came in in the morning. She was perplexed as to just why it had had this fit of whimsy until she realized the date. There was no way she could reshelve every book in the library in its proper place, so she just hoped everything would be back to where it belonged tomorrow.

Elizabeth was entertaining herself with some children's books she'd pulled out (from where the physics section usually was), but Raven had little doubt her daughter would grow restless at some point and wander. She had to wonder if there were any other children that belonged to her on the island this weekend, if Rook or Arella had made a return visit as well. But no Anakin Bass, please.

"Elizabeth is four years older than me, at least... is she a teenager this time? And I don't know Eirene," Lena said, curious.

I'll be eighteen next month! So, you know. Seventeen. And he'll be eighteen in July and I'm pretty sure he's into me but is too shy to say anything and Mom says you have to go after what you want, so. I'm going to ambush him on my birthday and make him admit it when no one else is around.

"Elizabeth is still young, not older like many of you this time," Raven confirmed, pointing to the young girl engrossed in a book. "Eirene...I am uncertain how many years from the future she is."

Telling him your feelings is risky, but if he is shy then it may be the only way, Raven agreed. Though perhaps you could have your Raven peek. Cheating? Maybe.

Ooooo! Do you-- would you? Not you you, Future You. Yay!

Cheating, what is this word? La la la.

Lena waved over to Elizabeth, highly amused that Kayla's BFF was so much younger right now. "Me and Berto are from 2040. Elena's here from 2036 -- his older sister-- and she's the same age as us, heh. I'm going to college in the fall." She cocked her head. "You're graduating this year, aren't you?"

It would not be ethical to misuse my gifts to alter his feelings or to probe too deeply into them, but perhaps skimming them to see if he would be receptive to your affections would be all right, Raven said. She'd want to spare Lena the pain of rejection, after all.

"I am," Raven said with a twinge of uncertainty. She still wasn't sure what to do, and maybe talking to Lena's mother would help. "I have been accustomed to children coming to the island, but this time so many of you are older."

That was an even tighter hug. Thank you thank you thank you! I just want to know I won't get shot down immediately, you know? I'm sure I can talk him into this!

She'd been able to do that since they turned 15 and Berto realized she was a girl. So really, it was not going to be difficult.

"It's weird for us too. I mean, the last two times were just play-time with my younger parents, but now... they want to ask questions, and it gets odd. And Auntie Momomomo and Uncle Jaime aren't together, and it's just-- strange."

Dinah would be happy to talk it out with Raven. After she drank some of her headache away.

"I understand," Raven said, nodding as she patted Lena's back. "Your future may not be their future, so why cause them distress by telling them information that may never come to be? But their curiosity is perfectly normal. We all wish to know what the future may hold for us."

"That, yeah," Lena said, grateful. "I mean, why would Dad even worry that he had a cooking show? He hates those things." She shook her head. "But it's worse for Berto, I think. Poor guy." She beamed at Raven though, and played with her hair. "I think the last time I saw you was at a party here in Fandom, before Christmas."

Raven had noted how Lena had waved with familiarity to Elizabeth. She bit her lip for a moment, hesitating. Speaking of wanting to know the future. "And Elizabeth too, but older?" she said. "And Jono?"

"Well, sure," Lena said, just a little puzzled. "Elizabeth wanted to see everyone, and Uncle Jono didn't feel like staying home that time..."

"Of course," Raven said, letting out her breath with relief. She gave Lena a reassuring smile. "I know it is silly to ask. Of course they were there, much as Jono tends to be anti-social at times. And I am certain you and Elizabeth and Kayla get into no small amount of mischief."

Lena gave her an unconvincing cherubic look very, very like her mother's. "Sometimes stuff just happens! Especially if you forget to take a map," she said, thinking aloud. "But Aunt Barbara has a GPS tracker on me, so, it's not like it ever gets really bad."

"GPS tracker? Like in my phone?" Raven said, only vaguely familiar with such technology. "They can be put on people as well? Perhaps that might be wise for all of you so we know your whereabouts at all times. Would they work across dimensions?"

She didn't have any possible frantic worrying parents in mind for that, no. And she didn't consider teenagers would find such tracking to be utterly abhorrent.

"Yeah, exactly. Aunt Barbara had me injected with a little chip when I was, I dunno. Five?" It was ages ago, anyway. "Just in case anyone tried to grab me." She frowned. "You know, I don't know? 'Cause Berto has one in him, and their Oracle tracks him, and I'm usually with him when I visit, so... Maybe?" She waved a hand. "That is so something I gotta ask Elena. Maybe my mom knows where I am right now?"

Ahahahahah no. Lena's mother was doing a slow burn-flail in the future.

"Oo, reminds me. That horrible Anakin kid isn't here this time, right?"

Lojacking their children. Raven was certain Karla would be on board with this.

She suppressed a shudder at Lena's next words. "No," she said, "I have not seen him since the first and only time he appeared." Thank Azar. She wanted to love her alternate children, but Anakin Bass was just creepy.

Completely. Who knew, it might keep them safer... even if massively annoyed.

"Good," Lena said in satisfaction. "Or I was going to have to beat him up again. I'm sorry, Aunt Raven, but he was just creepy." And a total brat. Jaina had agreed! It wasn't just her!

"Lena," Raven scolded gently. "You know I could not permit violence against my child. Even if he is...creepy."

And probably evil.

"Yeah, I know," Lena said. Repentant. Sort of.

She might have been remembering throwing teeny rum bottles at the kid's head. "Just as well, I guess. I got in enough trouble last time."

"There was too much of his father in him," Raven sighed. Or...something like that. Bass blood plus demon emotion-manipulating blood probably wasn't a good combination.

"Also he was kind of lame, with the broodiness and trying to scare people. How stupid is that?" Lena snorted.

"Anyway, your daughters are made of awesome. Which makes much more sense, 'cause so are you."
