Ethics [Thursday, February 9, 2012, 1st perioid]

Today the students would find themselves in the Danger Shop instead of the usual classroom: this time in a setting up to look like a house, with comfortable sofas and chairs to sit on in the living room and fully stocked kitchen behind it, and a trap door leading to the basement hiding under the rug.

...didn't everyone have that in their house?

When class began, Anakin came in through the door. "Today we talk about lying. Kant believed that any lie, no matter how small, was a violation of one's dignity. I, personally, am beginning to think that Kant came from a magical bubble land where he'd spent his life swaddled in cotton candy, but some of you might believe he has a point."

Anakin certainly didn't think so, though.

"Jim and Grabrielle assuming they are there are holding two lists: If you are on Jim's list, this is your house and one of the students on Gabriells's list is hiding from the authorities in your basement. In a minute, several armed stormtroopers--think police with absolutely no sense of humor--will be coming through the door. If they find your classmate, they will take them away and kill them. You have to decide if you will lie and say you have no idea where your classmate is, while your classmate tries to persuade you not to sell them out. If you get caught lying, you'll be killed as well. If you turn them in, it's possible--but not likely--you'll receive a monetary reward."

He clapped his hands to begin. "You have three minutes until the authorities arrive."

So, Sam was pretty sure she was on the wrong list. She ruled at lying. Of course, she was also pretty good at hiding from the police, if she did say so herself. Seriously, she should have been arrested way more often.

She cleared her throat, shook out her limbs, and burst into tears, turning to the nearest person from the "this is my house" list. "You've gotta help me! They're gonna kill me! I didn't do anything wrooooooooooooooooooooong!"

Dorothy was just slightly overwhelmed by such an outburst and started nodding profusely. "Oh, absolutely," she said, comforted in the idea of protecting someone when there was no doubt in her mind of their innocence. Not that she'd have sold anyone out if she had even an inkling of their innocence.

"You'll be safe, I promise. I might not be the best liar, but I think I know a thing or two about dealing with bad men."

Sam stopped crying. "If all else fails, hit them over the head with a bat," she suggested.

"I don't have a bat," Dorothy helpfully pointed out. Also, she was not all that strong. "Maybe you should have a bat, just in case?"

"Do you have a fire place poker? That might work even better."

Dorothy glanced about. "There's a kitchen," she pointed out. "There might be a sturdy frying pan."

That could make a good weapon, couldn't it?

"Ooo, good call. You're getting the hang of this already."

Re: Negotiate!

[identity profile] cant-be-helped.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Dorothy dutifully went and fetched a frying pan, which she held in her hands. "Well, should I keep this, or do you want it?"

She'd try her best if her acting wasn't good enough to fool the authorities.

"I'm already packing, but thanks."

She had her trusty butter-sock in her backpack.

"Packing what?" Dorothy had to ask, as the term wasn't entirely familiar to her in that context. She assumed it must be some sort of modern use of the word.

"A butter-sock," Sam said. She wasn't one to dodge around the issues.

Hiding in a basement with no way out was the worst plan ever, and Kate couldn't help but like think she wasn't so stupid as to get herself cornered and dependent on someone else.

Still.

"Anyone here who'd actually sell out a possibly innocent classmate for money?" If there was, speak now, and she'd keep note of who to avoid.

"Why must it be for money?" Loki asked. "I would think survival would be the stronger motivating factor in this particular situation."

Re: Negotiate!

[identity profile] withasword.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Doing for money makes you more of a scumbag than doing it for survival." Kate shrugged. "I want to know who never to invite to my secret base and share my deepest feelings with."

She did not have a secret base, and did not generally share feelings.

But mostly she didn't want to beg for her life. Her stubborn pride extended to simulated class exercizes.

"I'd prefer neither, but yeah." Sometimes, people got scared. If they got scared enough, the best judgement didn't necessarily get through.

"You prefer someone you need to buy?"
abitlowkey: (about to lie to you)

Loki smiled at that. "Oh, no. Not at all," he replied cheerfully. "Though I dare say few would trust me to do little more than save my own skin in such a situation. So, I may not be the best of judges on the matter."

[identity profile] withasword.livejournal.com 2012-02-09 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Are they justified in thinking that?" If he was honest about people not trusting him, maybe he was about the actual truth. You never knew, and she was curious.

"I believe that would depend upon who you asked," Loki replied. "Some might claim that it is my very nature to lie, others that I am wicked through and through simply based upon the unfortunate happenstance of my name. I, however, would refute both claims, but whether or not I am correct..."

He shrugged.

"That's not a 'no I'm innocent'," Kate noted, exhaling a short laugh. Which quite possibly said all it needed to. "Why aren't you the one being hunted by troopers?"

"Right." Excuse her for looking amused. "So what should I expect to have to do for you to hide me in your basement?"

If she would do it was still up for debate.

Lying huh? Jim was pretty sure he could handle that. Really, there were some situations where a bit of fibbing was good, screw integrity, and while he was aware that this was a sim, he wasn't about to just give up without a fight, either.

[With a madatory 'this week is insane and I have no idea when I'll be around again today' warning.]

Stacey was another on the 'please don't let me die' list, and was finding she felt a little dumb asking for hypothetical help in a simulation.

"I really need help here?" she tried. It'd be wrong to offer makeouts in exchange for being hidden. At least in front of the teacher.
