Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Unlike the last two classes, today the Danger Shop was set outdoors. Oz leant against a start line, and a trail was marked leading along a field and into a copse of trees, presumably it looped back at some point, since there was a finish line not too far away from the start.

"Today we're looking at teamwork," Oz said. Which should have been the first warning to anyone who knew how Oz liked to build team spirit. "Using one of the first methods that kids in these parts are likely to come across. The three legged race. For those of you who haven't run a three-legged race before, basically you run side by side in pairs, with your middle legs tied together, leading to the term three-legged, though thanks to numbers there'll be one four-legged team today, but don't worry I've figured all that out for you."

"Now one thing we'll be doing differently to normal is the track. Normally, these kinds of races are run on a fairly short, even track, but I feel you're up to something a bit more challenging." Here came that other shoe, ready to drop. "So our three-legged race is going to be cross-country."

Well, at least after radio this morning Rebecca was feeling slightly more favorable toward Rilla.

That did not exactly mean that she wanted to run three-legged and cross-country with her, but it could've ween worse. It could've been, say, that one weird-looking guy.

"These are not running shoes," Rilla groused, looking down at her boots.

"Mine either," Rebecca said with a mournful look at her own inappropriate footwear. "Does this island even have anywhere to buy new ones?"

HER LIFE WAS SO HARD.

Rilla nodded. "There's one shop, but I generally people head to the mainland for big dances and so on."

Because talking about shopping was a lot like getting ready to run, Rilla.

"I guess I'll have to go there soon," Rebecca sighed with another sad look at her shoes. "Want to come with?" No point shopping alone, after all.

"There's no harm in looking, right?" Rilla said. "I'm out of pocket money for clothing for a while."

Oh, cool, Winter's other mom. Juliet was happy to be paired with Hanna, even if she was a little sketchy on the three-legged race concept.

Hanna would agree on the sketchiness of the whole thing. "Have you ever done anything like this before?"

Juliet shook her head. "It seems very ... Girl Scout Camp," she said, with some distaste. "I mean, I guess we could try."

"Yeah. I've been to camp as a kid. I always made sure to avoid this kind of thing," Hanna admitted. "But trying probably can't hurt too much, right?"

"Not unless we fall down, but we won't," Juliet said, sounding oddly chipper about it. She picked up a few ties. "How do we start?"

Oh, great.

Britta Perry? Wasn't she the anarchist girl who thought that starting up a charity would be a way to 'stick it to the man'?

This was Peter, looking dubious.

Oh, oh! Rapunzel had a three-person team! That was probably an advantage, right? More people meant more good ideas for... um... running.

Or something.

She just knew they were going to win!

Goose was ...looking a little lost at the concept of a three-legged race, which he hadn't done before.

Well, he should try to follow Rapunzel's example. She'd never done such a race before, either, and she was still a bundle of excited nervous energy. "Isn't this exciting?"

"I suppose, for trying something new," he said with a nod.

"And we have a bigger team!" Clearly an advantage!

Richie hadn't run a three-legged race since, well, actually he was pretty sure he'd never done this before.

"So, we tie ourselves up, hobble, and hope for the best?"

This did not seem like a useful life skill. A useful skill would be untying yourself from someone else. Or cutting the ties.

Surreal was totally and completely planning to cheat, and she looked around for Stephanie.

Re: Partner up! - ES [04]

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Stephanie didn't exactly have a huge problem with cheating.

"So," she remarked, "this should be fun."

Re: Partner up! - ES [04]

[identity profile] harpy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe more fun for us than anyone else," Surreal replied dryly. "How do you feel about alternative modes of running?"

Re: Partner up! - ES [04]

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The look in Stephanie's eyes was the kind of look that made Bruce and Tim want to facepalm.

"One foot in front of the other on the ground is boring anyway. What did you have in mind?"

Re: Partner up! - ES [04]

[identity profile] harpy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"One foot in front of the other, a few inches off the ground," she answered. "I can't manage too much higher with two of us, but we'll at least be running on an even surface."

...possibly falling into a few mudholes when her concentration flagged, but it would totally be fine.

Damn you, Oz. Damn you.

Ordinarily, running a three-legged race was something Karla could handle, but she'd met Hank.

Maybe she could go team up with someone else.
