Unlike the last two classes, today the Danger Shop was set outdoors. Oz leant against a start line, and a trail was marked leading along a field and into a copse of trees, presumably it looped back at some point, since there was a finish line not too far away from the start.

"Today we're looking at teamwork," Oz said. Which should have been the first warning to anyone who knew how Oz liked to build team spirit. "Using one of the first methods that kids in these parts are likely to come across. The three legged race. For those of you who haven't run a three-legged race before, basically you run side by side in pairs, with your middle legs tied together, leading to the term three-legged, though thanks to numbers there'll be one four-legged team today, but don't worry I've figured all that out for you."

"Now one thing we'll be doing differently to normal is the track. Normally, these kinds of races are run on a fairly short, even track, but I feel you're up to something a bit more challenging." Here came that other shoe, ready to drop. "So our three-legged race is going to be cross-country."

"There's no harm in looking, right?" Rilla said. "I'm out of pocket money for clothing for a while."

"Maxed out your credit cards?" Rebecca guessed knowingly, looking sympathetic.

"Money from 1914 doesn't go as far here," Rilla replied.

"Riiiight." How very sad for you, Rilla. "Shop the sales?" she suggested.

Rilla nodded. "I do a lot of that," she said. "I probably should get a job, but there's Jims to look after."

"Find a babysitter?" Rebecca offered.

Easier said than done, Becs.

"But if all of my wages go to pay for the sitter, what's the point of working?" Rilla replied.

"...good point." Look, Rebecca had never had to pay attention to this stuff, okay? "You could ask a friend of yours to do it for free?"

"Every week?" Rilla shook her head. "It seems like quite a favour to ask."

"Then... never have any money and only ever wear the same ugly hat?"

Helpful, Rebecca.

Rilla clutched at her hat protectively. "It's not ugly!"

Rilla was lying.

"And this is only until spring, when I change to a different hat."

And you better believe that the first sign that it was going to stay warm would have Rilla stuffing the green monstrosity into a hat box and shoving it under the bed.

"So we're all going to have to just look at it until spring?"

Rebecca looked positively aghast.

"It's not that bad!"

This three legged team was really getting places!

"Oh, for god's sake," Rebecca huffed, reaching to try to swipe the hat off of Rilla's head and set it down on her own.

See how horrible it was now, Rilla? See it?

"You didn't get the hatpin in right," Rilla said sulkily.

"How does it look?" Rebecca asked, raising an eyebrow and crossing her arms over her chest.

If the answer wasn't 'horrible,' Rilla, you were doing it wrong.

"You look ridiculous," Rilla decided.

Rebecca took off the hat. "What about now?"

Rilla's eyes lit up with mischief. "A little better."

"So it's the hat, then," Rebecca concluded chipperly. She held it back out to her. "Do yourself a favor and burn it."

Rilla sighed. "I can't. I made a promise to my mother."

"So?"

Rilla stared at her like she was crazy. "So I have to wear that hat for three years or until the war's over."
