"Yes, good morning, Mr. Giles," Wesley said, using his shoulder to hold the phone to his ear. "I was hoping you might look over a spell for me."

A beat.

"Sleeping?" he repeated. "At --" he checked his watch, "--eleven in the morning?" Good god, that place was going downhill. "Well. Regardless. It's Norse in origin -- not dark so far as I can tell, though I suppose there's always -- Mr. Giles?" Wesley pulled the phone from his ear to squint at the 'call ended' message blinking on the screen. "Well, that was just unnecessary."

"Well, we've quite a selection of nonfiction and theory books as well," Wesley offered. "I personally tend to stick to those, anyway. I can't claim to be an expert on scientific texts," he disclaimed, "but I am especially familiar with our battle strategy section."

"I think I'd like to see those," said Susan.

"Right this way, then," he said, pushing his chair back and heading toward the stacks. "You mentioned a Tacticus?"

"Yes," she said, following. "Though as far as I can tell he only exists in my world."

"As far as I know, the library has texts from other dimensions as well," Wesley mused, bending down to squint at the books. "What sorts of, ah, principles does he discuss? Or, ah, she," he amended.

"He. A lot of things leading to disembowelment, really."

It was not exactly light reading, no.

"Sounds... pleasant," Wesley said. "And... rather similar to this book of theory, actually," he added, passing up a ~~lol so moddable~~ book on tactics. "You might find that interesting. Or this one."

"Thank you," she said, taking the books and looking at the titles. "Why do you know these?"

"Oh, professional interest," Wesley answered vaguely. Mainly because he thought it sounded badass, yeah. "And you? What's your interest in the field?"

"You never know when the information might come in handy," she explained. "Professional interest?"

"Off the island, I work as part of a team that often finds itself in combat situations," Wesley explained. "I feel it's best to be knowledgable about the existing theories on the subject."

She eyed him critically, like she was trying to see that. "So you're some sort of soldier, then?"

Ahahahaha.

"A rogue demon hunter, actually," Wesley clarified ~~because he always had to say that line, no exceptions~~. "My colleagues and I work to rid Los Angeles of the forces of darkness."

Also, to be super pompous. Or maybe that was just him.

"There are a lot of these rogue demons where you come from?"

~~SIGH.~~

Wesley was beginning to consider finding another job title for himself. "No, no, the 'rogue' refers to myself as a-- never mind," he said hastily. "Regardless. That's my interest in the matter."

"Are there normally battles between yourself and the... non-rogue demons, or is it mostly one-on-one?" she asked.

"Oh, it varies," Wesley answered. "That is to say, sometimes there's no battle at all -- in fact, some demon varieties are actually quite assimilated, and relatively peaceful -- and other times there are fights that are close to one-on-one. On other occasions... well, my employer and I recently faced about two dozen or so Slohesh demons several weeks ago."

So, you know. It changed depending on the episode.

"What makes you qualified to do this?" she wondered.

He didn't strike her as supernatural, something she only recently realized she could figure out, but she was lost to as why someone would do that on purpose.

"Training, mostly?" Wesley answered, fumbling a bit at the frankness of the question. "I, ah, I spent most of my youth studying demonology at the Watchers' Academy in England, preparing to act as a mentor of sorts to a supernatural warrior called a Slayer. When that, ah... fell through, pursuing this professionally seemed only appropriate."

"So you freelance to aid the supernatural against other supernatural beings?" she asked.

"Essentially, yes," Wesley said, with a bit of a laugh. "That's, ah. A much more concise way to put it."

"Interesting," said Susan thoughtfully.
