The Library is Open (02/02)

Rory went to the library after ACJ to see it unopened, and raised a brow before hurriedly opening up and taking her place behind the desk.

"Yeah, no problem there," Sam said, "though I still wish I was more involved in the actual party part. Cameron actually called me a wallflower earlier because I won't be able to dance. So how are things going with you?"

Sam hadn't listened to the radio much lately.

Parker considered and re-considered many things to say, then settled for, "I got my rabbit back, I didn't kill the people who blackmailed me into crap last week, I'm not speaking to Jarod, and I'm worried about you and Janet. And Cam's an idiot, I'll have to whap him for that. If you were up to par, you could completely win a dance-off competition against him."

"Um, wow." She laughed, then said, "Good. Good. Um, why not? And when I'm back up and around, I'll whap him myself." Sam still didn't mention Janet.

After running through that list of responses in her head, and cocking an eyebrow at Sam for omitting Janet, Parker said, "Because Jarod was keeping Esme all week and I was too upset to kill him, and he still doesn't get why I was angry. I slapped him, but that's it-- he wouldn't tell me who his co-conspirators were, the rat." She growled, then looked over at Fraiser. "It's hard to fight with some people properly. You know?"

"He what? That rat!" Sam was annoyed on Parker's behalf. "And apparently he's an idiot. Of course you're mad at him. He's your friend and he played an obnoxious joke on you!"

Sam glanced over at Janet. "Yeah, tell me about it."

"Thank you, yes. Jerk." Parker rubbed her eyes. "I didn't handle it well, but I've only stopped actively want to eat his liver in the last day or so. Plus he keeps calling to pester me, which doesn't help." She was not about to get into some of the other issues underlying the fight.

"I don't get all of what you two were fighting about. And I have no idea who's right, if anyone." Parker bit her lip. "But are you guys ever going to talk to each other again?"

"I don't know why you waste your time with him, Parker," Sam said. "He sounds like a colossal pain."

She sighed. "It's been a long time coming, I guess. I just want her to look out for herself! She's always risking her life to save others, which, yeah, great in theory, but sometimes it's not just a theory. And I don't know, Parker. Some of the stuff that was said was pretty unforgivable."

"He is a pain. He is. Except..." Parker shrugged. "We've been friends forever, and if he'd just apologize, and mean it, I think I'd let him off the hook. Just this once. I miss him," she muttered.

"I saw where your fight with Fraiser was going, which was why I bugged out. I had no idea what the hell to say." She paused, then lowered her voice a lot. "Janet died?"

"Ah," Sam said, knowingly, and thinking of O'Neill, "I have one of those in my life too. You're dead in the water, Parker. You should just register for china patterns or something and save yourself the aggravation."

"I wish you'd taken me with you," Sam said, quietly. "And yes, but I don't really like to talk about it. You'll have to ask her."

Janet slammed the last book on the cart. Hard. And glared at both of them.
