The Library is Open (02/02)

Rory went to the library after ACJ to see it unopened, and raised a brow before hurriedly opening up and taking her place behind the desk.

Elizabeth noticed the movement, looked up, and smiled across at Parker, waving back.

Janet smiled just a little and waved at Liz.

Elizabeth closed her book, and wandered across towards Parker and Janet.

"I really shouldn't worry about a test in US Government, should I?" she grinned. "How's things?"

Janet chuckled. "I don't think you, of all people, need to worry. Things are--they're okay."

"Professor Lyman suggested learning the preamble. It's another example of "been there, done that,"" Elizabeth laughed. She tilted her head at Janet. "Are you sure? You looked a little down in foreign lit this morning."

"Learning the preamble. I'd imagine you could cite the entire Constitution in your sleep by now." Janet shrugged. "Did I? I must be low on sleep or something." Denial: Not just a river in Egypt. Drag it on out of her...

"I have been known to talk in my sleep," Elizabeth shrugged. "So who knows what you might overhear tonight."

She just looked at Janet. "Please. For you to be low on sleep, you wouldn't have slept this entire week. And I know you have. Give me some credit; I've had quite a bit of experience reading people in my life."

Janet smiled. "Probably the entire poltical history of Europe. Which will be a nice cure if I develop insomnia."

"Especially people you know well?" asked Janet wryly. "I don't really want to talk about it." Of course, you should totally ignore everything I'm saying here.

Elizabeth grinned. "You never know. Although it's more likely to be Africa than Europe."

"If there's something you don't want to talk about, that means that there is something bothering you," Elizabeth pointed out. "Talking about things helps. Trust me. I did it for a living."

"Oh, good," said Janet. "I'll fall asleep even faster."

"I hate politicians," muttered Janet. "And diplomats. Especially ones that make sense." She glanced up at Liz. "Sam found out that I'd bruised my ribs." Janet still didn't mention how she'd bruised them. Funny, that.

Elizabeth just snickered.

"And..." Elizabeth prompted. "I hardly think that Sam finding out that you've injured yourself merits your current apparent state." She paused, and looked serious. "Unless there's something more about your injured ribs that you didn't tell me."

Janet sighed. "Of course there is." She moved over, away from Parker, and waited for Liz to follow.

Elizabeth followed, biting her lip.

At least the only other person in the library that she could see was Parker, but even so, she didn't exactly want to have this conversation around her.

"My ribs were bruised when Darla decided to attack Vala, Isabel, Izzy, and myself," said Janet, meeting Liz's eyes. And not feeling even one tiny bit guilty for not telling anyone sooner. Really.

Elizabeth paled. She still really wasn't used to this casual acceptance of violence, although she usually managed to hide it.

"When?" she asked quietly.

"Maybe a week ago," said Janet. Not really sure when this is left over from. "I'm fine, you know. Even Vala's fine, and she was the more seriously injured of the two of us."

Re: Seventh Period

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth sighed. "I know you're fine, now, but there was this time when you weren't. I know it's not like you report to me, or have any obligation to tell me these things, but I would like to know. You're one of my closest friends, and it makes me feel bad that you were suffering, and I didn't even see."

Janet frowned. "I really didn't want to worry anyone," she said. "Bruised ribs do heal, after all. But why do you think I was suffering and you didn't see it?"

"But then we worry more when we do find out," Elizabeth said. "And you were in pain and trying to hide it from me. I could have helped before that morning if I'd have known."

"Or some people could start yelling," muttered Janet.

"Okay, maybe I shouldn't have tried to hide it," said Janet, in a normal voice. "But it wasn't like there was anything anyone really could have done either."
