Library, 1/31

Well-armed with coffee and muffins from her trip to the Perk, Angela sets up camp behind the collections desk. Idly, she wonders where the Librarian is.

In between bursts of library work, she's trying to read some Flannery O'Connor short stories. Yet, somehow, she can't keep her mind on the words.

But she is there to help with all your library needs.

"I know," Angela moans. "He caught me off-balance and I just could not say no. I figure it's better he likes me, anyhow."

"It's just lunch. Right?"

"'Course it is. Jade's gonna knife the first mate in his sleep before this is over, I'm sure of it..." Zero peeped over the book. "Angela, do you have a thing for dangerous men?"

Angela almost chokes at the question. "Do I have a ... No. No! I mean, I don't think so... I mean, come on! I'm going out with Broots on Thursday. Broots is so not dangerous. Serously."

She buries her face in her hands. "Um. Maybe?"

"Well, no, Broots is far from dangerous. But there's the Parker relationship...is it, like..." Zero leans toward her and whispers. "Do you need to speak to Dr. Pensive?"

"Who?" Angela says, not recognizing the name. Then, as it dawns on her: "The shrink?"

She lowers her voice and hisses at Zero. "No. I do not need a shrink because I am having lunch with a demon.

And dated a hit man.

And, god, my first boyfriend was this stoner dropout.

She rubs her forehead. "Okay. Um, there's kind of a pattern, isn't there? Maybe? If I come back from lunch claiming to love Belthazor, will you knock me out with youer mallet and deliver me to her?"

"But, I mean, aren't you supposed to have a bad boy phase?"

"I promise," Zero swore, meaning it wholeheartedly. "And there's a phase, and then there's, well, a self-destructive pattern. Feel free to hate me."

"I don't. You're right that there's a point where it gets to be, like, slef-hatred," Angela promises. She looks at Zero, rememebring somethign she doesn't like to think about. "Um, the thing with the gun in September? Do you still have a problem with Marty because of it? I mean, I know you'll hang out around him, but it's hard to avoid people at this school."

"No, I really don't. I've had more alarming things pointed at my head. It was just the one-time thing, and he apologized, and...he really has changed, you know. He's not that snappy rude twit he was when--the thing with the gun. I was just saying, y'know, when you met him...hitman."

"I know," Angela nods. "And yeah, I should watch for the pattern, I guess. No further boyfriends who have broken the law, promise. Or at least not, like, major laws."

She leans her chin on one hand. "So what's worse that you've had pointed at your head, anyhow?"

"You don't want to know. Trust me. Let's just say it was my da's birthday party an' leave it at that, yeah? Of course," Zero realizes, "Between my parents, they've broken pretty much every law on the books. An' they're good people. At least, I think so. So maybe that's not the best way. I don't know."

Angela nods. "Yeah, I guess I just need to ... see what happens, y'know? But I am hoping no more hit men. One is enough for a lifetime."

Zero snorts. "Squall, I doubt you have to worry about that. Even here. Who actually meets two hitmen in their lifetime?"

"Watch me find another one. Seriously. I mean, there's more than one Chosen One, why wouldn't there be more than one hit man?"

She glances at Zero. "Speaking of which, is the Library okay? The new principal wrote "chosen one of rock" on his application and I filed it. Wanted to make sure it wasn't preparing to blow up, or anything."

"Noooo," Zero says slowly. "It doesn't care. Janet does."

Angela snorts. "That's what Rory and I figured. Just wanted to check with you, 'cause you have the contract and all."

"We aren't telling people not to write it anymore. Janet can deal."

Zero privately thinks Janet can be pretty scary herself, but she doesn't say anything. It's Angela's funeral. "Mmm," she agrees, and flips the page in her novel. "Why on Earth would they have a traditional Christian wedding ceremony? He's a bloody pirate and she's a ninja!"

"So the author can describe the wedding dress and the wedding night?" Angela suggests. "Or maybe it's to show they're converting, or something."

"The wedding dress is kind of concerning, too. I don't think they had white silk cheongsams in the Gulf of Mexico in sixteen fifty-whatever. Wouldn't they have been much more likely to, y'know, live in sin? Oh, oh, and now we get to the wedding night."

Angela raises her eyebrows. "Fabulous. Watch her get pregnant. They always do, in those books. And then the epilogue has the perfect little baby."

"Oh, oh. You're right. Boy or girl..." Zero flips ahead to the epilogue. "And after the most stunningly easy labor in, y'know, history, it's a girl!"

"And they all lived happily ever after?" Angela asks. "Hey, did Jubilee leave any other books?"
