Sociology of Violence

Grissom is rather abrupt, and launches into a lecture defining hate crime before the students can even sign in.

He then passes out a handout entitled The seven-stage hate model: the psychopathology of hate groups from The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin.

"As you can see, the model is as follows..."

Stage 1: The Haters Gather
Stage 2: The Hate Group Defines Itself
Stage 3: The Hate Group Disparages the Target
Stage 4: The Hate Group Taunts the Target
Stage 5: The Hate Group Attacks the Target Without Weapons
Stage 6: The Hate Group Attacks the Target with Weapons
Stage 7: The Hate Group Destroys the Target

"I'd like you to name one group in which you've seen this behavior, at least through Stage Four, and describe how they fit the model in an essay before you go.

You will be graded."

Grissom then points to a stack of large books on a table by the door. "Crimes of Hate : Selected Readings, for your homework. Select to do all the readings. It's only 408 pages."

Sociology of the Paranormal

Grissom wheels in a TV unit, and addresses the class.

"While you are watching the film, I want you to think about why people perpetuate hoaxes. By the end of class, I want a proposal from each of you on my desk for a hoax of your own design. You'll receive extra credit if your proposal involves the paranormal, although that's not required at this time.

Also, those of you that have elected to finally pass in your last homework assignment would be advised to leave it on my desk as well."

He then screens most of the NOVA special The Boldest Hoax.

"Before you go, take this vocabulary sheet. Have all the terms, A-Z, memorized by Monday. You can go."

Veronica is uncharacteristically absent today. She does, however, leave a voicemail (http://drgrissom.livejournal.com/9397.html?thread=152245#t152245) for Dr. Grissom sometime during 4th period.

Lee turns in an essay on how the cylons rebelled from their human creators and attacked them. While it was debatable in the colonies if the cylons did this out of hatred, Lee is certain that an enslaved robot populace with sentient thoughts certainly were genocide-friendly due to hatred, not just because of some fluke or boredom. He also suggests that how the war with the cylons indicates that they will probably never strike out at their human creators again. Ever. Because even if they can feel hatred, they probably won't carry a grudge.

He also takes his reading.

Draco writes an essay on the Death Eaters and how they target non-magical humans. He was into extreme detail in his essay. He also may have lifted up his sleeve to look at his arm in order to accurately describe what the Dark Mark looked like.

He grabs his reading on the way out.

Krycek wrote an essay detailing an incident that he remembered from the good old FBI days that actually had nothing to do with aliens and then turned it in, picking up the reading on his way out.

Peter wrote an essay about the treatment of mutants in his New York, from the initial small mobs that formed when a mutant was spotted to the creation of mutant-hunting robots sent to apprehend them.

Fortunately, anti-mutant violence seemed to be falling.

Aeryn's essay would be much longer and more detailed if she wasn't still hating the entire English language due to it making no sense. This way at least you probably got spared a lot of blood and gore in her essay. And let's face it. You skip the bias, too.

Walter turns in a proposal for a hoax convincing people that he can fly. It involves jumping out of a plane with no parachute and using his wires to help him land safely.

He's convinced it will work.

He is, however, not convinced that he'll be able to memorize all that vocabulary.

Angela watches the video. After some deliberation, she decides to create a hoax to convince people the assistant's lounge is haunted.

It's not even a stretch for this place, right?

She then notices that Phoebe is upset and is suddenly very concerned.

The vocabulary is definitely going to need the weekend to absorb.

Shep hands in a note that says:

Dr. Grissom, would you mind if I got you my proposal before class on Monday? Right now the number of odd things I'm asked to believe before breakfast is crowding my brain. I'm gonna need a little time to make something up because anything that can happen here, already has, I'm fairly sure.

Jessica's proposal for a hoax is convincing people that her father is the owner of Bloomingdales. Jessica is not all that thrilled with the thougth of creating a lie, so she hesitates as she writes it down. As she looked at her piece of paper she wonders if she could convince herself that her father owned Bloomingdales. Wouldn't that be lovely? Jessica smiles, shrugs and places the proposal on Grissom's desk.

Lyta peers around the edge of the doorframe. Seeing the professor at his desk, she enters. She is careful to maintain her distance a bit, sensing just from his body language that he's in quite a mood today. "Dr. Grissom?"

[And a slow response is okay if needed. I'm still at work, so my own will be slow.]
