Grissom is rather abrupt, and launches into a lecture defining hate crime before the students can even sign in.

He then passes out a handout entitled The seven-stage hate model: the psychopathology of hate groups from The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin.

"As you can see, the model is as follows..."

Stage 1: The Haters Gather
Stage 2: The Hate Group Defines Itself
Stage 3: The Hate Group Disparages the Target
Stage 4: The Hate Group Taunts the Target
Stage 5: The Hate Group Attacks the Target Without Weapons
Stage 6: The Hate Group Attacks the Target with Weapons
Stage 7: The Hate Group Destroys the Target

"I'd like you to name one group in which you've seen this behavior, at least through Stage Four, and describe how they fit the model in an essay before you go.

You will be graded."

Grissom then points to a stack of large books on a table by the door. "Crimes of Hate : Selected Readings, for your homework. Select to do all the readings. It's only 408 pages."

Grissom wheels in a TV unit, and addresses the class.

"While you are watching the film, I want you to think about why people perpetuate hoaxes. By the end of class, I want a proposal from each of you on my desk for a hoax of your own design. You'll receive extra credit if your proposal involves the paranormal, although that's not required at this time.

Also, those of you that have elected to finally pass in your last homework assignment would be advised to leave it on my desk as well."

He then screens most of the NOVA special The Boldest Hoax.

"Before you go, take this vocabulary sheet. Have all the terms, A-Z, memorized by Monday. You can go."

Phoebe saw Piper come in and lowered her head. Finally she passed her sister a note.

Why didn't you tell me about you and Cole?!

Piper blinked at the note a few times. This couldn't be happening. Phoebe knows?

How do you know about that?

There are tears slipping down Phoebe's cheeks.

Logan told me during third period in the assistant's lounge. How could you keep something like that from me, Piper? How could you not tell me you loved him...that you slept with him?

Piper so very much wanted to hide right now.

I didn't really love him. I thought I did. It didn't mean anything. And how did Logan find out?

I don't know, but he took great glee in telling me about it...and saying that Cole threatened to kill Veronica if she told me about the two of you.

Why didn't you tell me?

This time, Piper was trying to fight back tears. She hated seeing her sister hurting. And she suddenly felt betrayed by Veronica.

I was trying to protect you. I didn't want you to get hurt.

So, in protecting me from hurt, you end up getting hurt as we prove that Prue is right when she says I always steal your boyfriends...

That's not true! You didn't steal him from me. I realized he loves you, not me. I was okay with that.

Phoebe looked up tp meet PIper's eyes and then looked back down.

We broke up.

Piper winced slightly when she read this note. She felt responsible.

I'm so sorry.

...

Don't be. It's what everyone wanted anyway.

The note is damp.

I didn't. Not this way.

I...it hurts, Piper, all of it.

Piper glanced at Phoebe, this time not trying to hide her tears.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, not bothering to write it again.

"Not mad...not at you..." Phoebe shook her head and when class was over she bolted from the room.
