Advanced Criminal Justice, Class #5, Period 1, 01.24.06

The Tick was sitting at his desk looking slightly tired. Lockheed wasn't in class today. It was probably going to be an easy discussion.

"Hello, class! Lockheed is not with us today. He had something else to take care of. Today, we're taking a slight detour in our discussion. Today, we're talking about your experiences."

"I know that we have a lot of people from different cultures here, so I thought it would be keen to talk a little about Justice in your original environment! Please share some information with the class about a Justice organization from your home. It can be a superhero team, the military police, your local sheriff's department, or even the occasional lone individual who tries to write the wrongs in the world. As long as they are for justice and, I suppose, according to my earlier statement, are organized, share that bit of you with us!"

"Your metaphor of the week is the shift key on a keyboard."

"For extra credit that is actually related to the lecture for once, please name your favorite Defender of Justice from your home!"

"Uh, there aren't any, back home. I mean there's the occasional roaming do-gooder but on the whole there's really no-one into the whole organised fight for Justice."

"Well, where I come from there is a military group that tries to fight for Justice for people from all over the galaxy the universe the place. They do this every day, even though most people don't even know their names or what they're doing, so I suppose that makes them superheroes of a sort."

"So the local police aren't extraordinary in any way?" Tick asked, sounding disappointed.

Marty looks disheveled, hungover and like he was rudely awakened by getting his butt pinched by some greenskinned guy with horns.

He looks blearily at Professor Tick. "Um... Back home?"

Marty draws a complete mental blank and starts grasping for straws.

"Um... My ex-girlfriend's dad worked for a car company and blew the whistle on a faulty sunroof that leaked."

"There are heroes in all walks of life, doing all sorts of things! Your ex-girlfriend's dad was an unheralded hero until just now!" Tick gave a small salute.

"Well, I guess I'm part of it where I come from," Aeryn says. "It's military and we really step in where we're needed to restore some sort of order and really to torture and shoot up people who don't agree with us, but you're not getting me to admit that, and it's all done in a very professional fashion anyway."

"There's the USAF where I come from. They might not fight crime on the streets and bring it to the courts, but they do bring peace and order on a larger scale. I think in a way they try to defend our country in order to allow the goverment to keep Justice within their borders."

"Very true, Cameron! They may not work for Justice directly, but they do help pave the way for it! It is the snowplow, and the snow is forces that would prevent the School Bus of Justice from reaching its destination! Add in one snowplow, and the kids are at school in no time!"

Veronica wondered for a brief moment if it would be wrong to say herself.

"The local sheriff's department in my hometown is fairly inept these days," she shared. "But there is at least one deputy who is still a good guy and there's also a certain PI in town who tries to make sure justice is served."

"I've heard good things about this PI," Tick said, smiling. "I understand that his daughter isn't too shabby in the Justice department, either!"

"If we're going for organizations, I'd say the Watchers Council. They exist to help train the Slayer to battle the forces of evil."

Angel took a sip of coffee. Mmm, caffiene.

"'course most of us feel they couldn't find the forces of darkness, let alone defeat them, with a map, a shotgun, and a member of the forces of evil who really wanted to retire and give up the whole evil thing so he could take up a new life as a beautician. But that's what the Watchers are supposed to do."

Parker is wearing sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a Cubs cap with her hair tucked through it in a ponytail. Fetchingly. If you had supernatural sense, the rage coming off her could probably start a forest fire.

"Ummm.... I knew a guy back home who was kind of a profiler." She was not about to get into Centre Security here. "He'd look at the evidence and often be able to recreate what happened. So I guess that counts?"

Rory entered the classroom, and set the papers she had been grading from the previous week on Tick's desk so that they might be handed back to the students before taking a seat in the back.

Archie rests his chin in his hands and ponders the question for a while, looking troubled. "Purely in the context of my time period, I suppose you could say that the British Navy is the greatest organization for Justice in that part of the world. We certainly thought of ourselves that way -- upholding civilization, and whatnot. Though, after some things I learned in Sociology last semester, I'm not entirely sure this is accurate any more."

Anakin smiled. "Every world has its own government and police forces, of course," he began, "but when a crisis arises, they call for Jedi." He sat a little straighter in his chair. "For 25 millennia, the Jedi have been the defenders of peace and justice in my galaxy. It's the reason for our Order. We use our atunement with the Force to bring peace and justice to situations that would be impossible to resolve otherwise."

He looked up at Tick. "That's what I'm being trained to do, sir. To become another servant of justice in my galaxy."

Bridge bounces. "Where I come from, we have Space Patrol Delta, which is sort of a combination between the police and the military. We- um, because I'm a Cadet at the Academy right now, even though I'm not *actually* at the Academy because I'm here on an exchange, sort of- we defend the galaxy against large-scale threats. Um, once I progress to a high enough level in my training, I'll be made a Power Ranger with the rest of my squad," Bridge bounces again, "and I'll be on active duty and stuff."

"There's not really anyone in my town," Logan said. "I mean, there's cops, but they're either corrupt, stupid, or both. There was a major murder investigation and it took a high school girl to figure out the truth. And she almost got killed doing it. If we had any real Justice Organizations, she wouldn't have gotten hurt."
