Jung - Archetypes, Etc. (Thursday, 01/19/2006, 7th Period)

"Last time, we watched ~~Star Wars IV: A New Hope~~ Space Battles XII: A New Start," said Jenny. "There were a few archetypes in there. I heard a lot of you guys talking about wondering what the archetypes are, and that's what we're going to cover ~~when I'm not posting class at 10 PM at night~~ later. Let's start out with telling me what Jungian archetype you think each character was."

OOC: Yes, I normally write these the day of class and post them while I'm at work. Sadly, work was very busy today. I'm sorry. Next week, we'll be back to normal.

Also, the three characters we've had named so far are Dark Helmet (the villain, of course), Hanno (gosh, maybe Han) and Leanna (Leia, naturally). Go nuts with other names and plot points and stuff, guys. I'm keeping our pop culture thread/list updated on this, of course.

"Well, this Ted Bologna guy is obviously an example of the archetype of the Wise Old Man," Anakin said. "He's cryptic, he gives just enough hints to our intrepid hero to give him an idea that he might have something ahead of him other than being a dirt salesman on a useless planet, and then he dies tragically early."

Anakin scowled. "I don't like him."

"It would be interesting to see the Wise Old Man character in his younger years where perhaps HE is the hero and models himself after another Wise Old Man, since these stories are apparetly very circular in a sort of 'All of this has happened before; All of this will happen again' way," Lee adds.

"Bet he had a cryptic Wise Old Man, too," Anakin said. "I'm sure they both hid their complete lack of knowledge in obscure quotations and mythology."

He looked at the floor. "How's Duke going to be able to face Dark Helmet if he only has the most basic knowledge? I mean, it's not like Dark Helmet is going to help him out, or turn good or something."

"Well, I personally don't think Dark Helmet is a redeemable character," Lee mutters.

"Are there more movies to this series? I mean, I see it's episode XII--does Duke die at the end, or is the power of his Hero archetype enough to stop him from the ass-kicking that Dark Helmet seemed very ready to deliver if it weren't for that totally lucky shot of Hanno's at the end of the film?"

"Usually, the hero survives no matter what. Which I think is kinda lame. Also, the hero often has a brother who dies in his place sometimes and I find that pretty stupid too," Lee says, disgruntled.

"And If it *is* a series, I hope Dark Helmet survived the film though, it's not exactly clear..." Lee says. "

"Dark Helmet is scary," Anakin said, nodding. "I guess he's kind of the living embodiment of Jung's Shadow? Kind of wonder how he got that way, though. No one starts out that evil, do they? I mean, was he wandering around with a bucket on his head as a child plotting to take over the star system?"

"He probably was just some nobody who suddenly was put in a position of extreme power and couldn't handle it," Lee mused.

Anakin nodded. "Makes sense. Cool outfit, though. Lot of animosity between him and Ted Bologna, too. Wonder what happened there. Bad break-up maybe?"

"Oh my gods, Dark Helmet and Ted Bologna? As in...dating?" Lee kind of swoons a little.

"Did you see that smile Ted gave him right before Dark Helmet cut him in half with his Staff of Light? There's some history there that we didn't get enough information about."

Anakin made a face. "And what was up with the obvious phallic symbolism in those Staffs of Light, anyway? I'd rather not think about why Ted was keeping Duke's uncle's Staff of Light around for all of those years, anyway. Kind of strange obsession to have."

"Duke, the whiny annoying kid ~~who's just like his dad at that age~~? He's the hero," Angel said. "He's got the whole stupid journey to go on just to prove himself."

"I don't like him, either," Anakin said. "Stupid hair. Whiny voice. Reminds me of someone I know. Can't think of who, though."

Lee doesn't want to admit that Duke reminds him of ~~a young Tom Zarek~~ himself. Just a little.

Only with a cape.

"Aren't heroes always annoying?"

"You know, I kind of think they want us to think that Duke and Leanna are the soul mate archetype?" Rory ventured. "But I kind of get a weird feeling about them. So I think Hanno and Leanna are kind of soulmatey."

Lee's shocked at this. "No, no, no, it's all about Duke and Leanna, Rory. Didn't you see the way he looked at her and basically dropped everything to go rescue her? They're totally getting together at some point in the next few chapters."

"Wonder what their kids would look like?" Angel mused idly.

"They'd be pretty," Rory said skeptically. "And really smart, I guess. But...no, I still get kind of a squicky feeling about them."

"I suppose the Inertia is the Great Mother figure, as it were, since there are no strong women characters outside the princess. I'm not sure," Lee ventures.

Okay admitting: While the Star Wars are on my "To Watch" list, I haven't actually seen them due to not having enough time. *hangs head in shame*

*cries*

There was this time in the eighth grade when they forced us into the auditorium and made us match episode one instead of gym class. I kinda fell asleep but I really wasn't into those kind of things back then. *runs* But I promise I'll watch all six this summer! Or spring!
