Welcome Dance - the Gym

The streamers and banners are up. So are a zillion multi-colored helium balloons.

The floor is cleared, and the bandstand is up at the north side of the room, ready for Dusted Bunnies to take their places.

The refreshment table, with the (as yet) unspiked punch is in place. There are chips and stuff as well, Chex mix, a few nachos and some guacamole.

Party on, dudes! And welcome to Fandom High.

"Hey," a quiet voice behind her said. "Sorry I'm late."

"Hey," Rory said, turning to the voice she recognized all too well. "You're not that late."

Anakin smiled. "What did I miss? Anything good?"

"Zero's band played a bit, Alanna is scared that the pets are going to unite, Archie and Jaye were cute, and Parker didn't mess with your posters," Rory replied, smiling and lowering her voice a bit. If that meant she had to lean closer to Anakin so he could hear, oh well.

Anakin leaned a little closer as well.

To hear Rory.

Yeah.

"Good to know," he said softly. "And you look beautiful, by the way."

"Thank you," Rory replied, her cheeks heating up. "You look nice too."

Oh no. Awkwardness had returned.

"Um. Want some punch? No one's spiked it yet."

"Punch would be good."

Something to distract him--definitely a good idea.

He looked around the room and waited for his cheeks to cool off.

Rory handed him a cup of punch, her feminist sensibilities cheering because, yay, girls can do nice things for guys.

"So. Zero's band is good. And they're really nice, too. I talked to them in the library earlier," she said, bouncing slightly on the balls of her feet.

"Thank you," Anakin said, taking a sip. He listened to the band, his foot tapping along. "I like it," he said, smiling. "It's different than what I'm used to."

"It's a bit different than my taste, too, but I have a friend who's really into punk, so I'm used to it. And this is good, too. I know it can be kind of hard to tell," Rory smiled.

"Until you've heard droid spoken word albums, you don't know the meaning of musical pain," Anakin said with a small grin. "This doesn't even come close. There's a beat and everything."

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Would that count as music, though?" Rory speculated. "Because we have stuff like that here. And I didn't know Zero could sing so well. She told me she serenaded her boyfriend outside his house one time. With a song she wrote. And now I'm belatedly impressed."

"Well, there's also some truly horrifying Bothan noseflute music that's become inexplicably popular in the last few cycles, but I'm just going to ignore it until it goes away," Anakin said. He listened in particular for Zero.

"She is really good," he said, nodding.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Very good. She's totally going to have a fan club tomorrow," Rory agreed. "People are going to constantly be asking her to do music stuff." She nodded awkwardly.

She was really, really bad at this whole dance thing.

"Better her than me," Anakin said with a wry smile.

He took another sip of his punch, completely out of topics of conversation.

He was really, really bad at dances, too.

Not that Jedi went to many.

"Yep," Rory nodded.

She wondered what it was about this things that was so inherently awkward. She was perfectly capable of talking usually. But dim the lights and throw her by a punch bowl, and suddenly she was at her most shy.

The band wrapped the Ramones cover they had been playing, and took up a slower tempo.

Rory flushed crimson and stared at her feet.

Anakin blushed, too, but held out a hand. "I don't suppose I could convince you to dance, could I?" he asked. "As friends, of course," he said for the benefit of any shrubbery that might be listening.

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Rory smiled, and took his hand. "Okay. As friends, of course. Um. Maybe somewhere where not a lot of people will be looking at us, though? You know how I get self-conscious."

[identity profile] emo-padawan.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
"And that's before you've seen me dance," Anakin said. He looked around and found a dark corner (but not that dark corner where everyone else was hanging out). He pointed towards it. "Over there okay?"

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Rory nodded, starting to walk over to said corner. "A nice, unoccupied dark corner, where it's not even likely people will look or notice or judge our dancing. And you can't be that bad. Slow-dancing is easy."

[identity profile] emo-padawan.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Let's find out," Anakin said with a smile once they got to their secluded little spot, holding his arms out.

He'd had lessons. And had even paid attention.

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Rory flailed mentally, but managed to keep her composure outwardly. Sort of.

She awkwardly put her arms around Anakin's neck, and then paused, looking at him.

"I don't know how you want to do this. Like is it okay just like this, or do you want to do the more formal way where you hold one of my hands, or....um...." She shrugged a little helplessly. "I've danced both ways. It doesn't matter to me."

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] emo-padawan.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Anakin glanced around and noticed that most of the people in the room seemed to be following Rory's method.

He put his hands around her waist and pulled her just slightly too close.

"I think I like this way," he murmured in her ear.

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Rory stole a glance around the room, smiling as she saw that everyone seemed far too engrossed in their own dance partners to pay their dark little corner any mind.

"Good," she whispered, adjusting her arms. "Because this is the best way for very good friends like us to dance."

Re: Punch (pre-spiking)

[identity profile] emo-padawan.livejournal.com 2006-01-15 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmm," Anakin agreed. "Much better than the stuffy formal way that I had to learn for the very, very rare diplomatic functions that Jedi can stop watching the doors and actually have, and I use the term very loosely, fun."
