The Library (12/06/05)

Janet unlocks the library, flips on the lights, and goes behind the Collections Desk. ~~She checks in Methos' office to see if his delivery from yesteray has been opened yet. Or if it's still there.~~ Then she starts looking up useful books for her Indo-European and Classics presentation and working on her independent study in math.

Parker stalks in to the counter, and glares at everyone.

Angela comes back from a shelving run and notices Parker's expression. She crosses her arms across her chest. "So is that a glare about, like, a specific thing, or is it a life-in-general glare?"

Setting her jaw, Parker says, "Boyfriend thing. Ignore me. I don't want to talk about it. I just want to kill him."

"I get that," Angela says. "Including the not actually wanting to talk. But, um ... don't kill him. Michael, right?"

"Right," Parker said through gritted teeth. "Michael. French. Sunglasses." For a second, there was an expression of pain on her face, then it went back to pissed-off. "I'm not killing him... for now." She shook herself. "What have you been doing?"

Angela gives Parker an uneasy look. "Whatever it is, I hope it works itself out."

"Me? I, um, interviewed Rover. I think I'm just going to do what Jake and Chloe do and start sleeping in the newspaper office, 'cause I feel like all I've done this week is stuff for them. And I came here and avoided Angel. That's about it so far."

Parker looked around, her brows drawing down in more annoyance. "He's here? Joy." Sighing in frustration, she said, "I told him I wasn't going to kick him out. I didn't think he'd pick here for his new clubhouse."

"He was talking to Janet when he got here. Then he went into the stacks. I dunno, maybe he left while I was talking to Rory. Who is also here and won't leave, because she clearly hasn't had enough trauma lately."

She fidgets with her necklace. "You really think he's changed, huh?"

Parker made a sour face. "Yes. Souled, sane, semper fi. Only as safe as a rabid lion inside a trained, muzzled lion. But changed? Sure." She shook her head. "Damnit, I don't like that he's here when Rory is here. Why won't she leave?"

"She heard he defended her in that stupid ethics class Friday. It makes her feel like she can deal, at least as long as there are people she can trust around. Plus, he let her throw waffles at him and apparently that made a big impression."

She tucks her hair behind her ear with an expression of concentration on her face. "Did he defend her? Because I cannot imagine him disagreeing with Tara, let alone over Rory."

"Yeah, he did," Parker admitted. "Or rather, he defended himself, as well as Rory and Echolls. He wasn't happy about being the object lesson, so to speak. And he was extremely pissed off that Tara didn't warn the other two. He wasn't letting up when I got too pissed off at Tara to stay." She shook her head. "Never thought I'd see a day when he was making more sense than her, but... She's so freaking naive, it borders on criminal."

"I heard about the waffles after the fact. And punching. Rory's dealing better than most people would, but it's still rough on her. Obviously."

"Obviously," Angela agrees. "She's a really strong person, y'know?"

Angela thinks about Parker's description of what happened in class, twirling a heavy ring on her thumb. "Tara's ... I don't know, she means well? And she's really an incredibly sweet person. But I think she tries so hard to see every side of everything, that she doesn't realize there are times where there is just one side." She shrugs. "We had a pretty normal class in the Monday section. Maybe she's figuring it out."

"We can but hope," Parker said. "Friday's class ought to be a trip. Although if you're right, maybe it'll be calmer." She sighed. "I haven't talked to Zero about the Investigator's Club yet, by the way. We're sort of -- not talking. But I will, soon."

"You and Zero aren't talking?" Angela says, clearly dismayed. "I can't deal with Pinkie and Lavender not being friends."

She leans her cheek on one hand, rubbing the side of her forehead. "Does the thing with Michael you won't talk about somehow fit into the reason you aren't talking to Zero? Because it seems like ... a lot of not talking, from here. Not that it's really my business, but whatever."

"We're friends. Definitely friends," Parker says, crossing her arms over her stomach. "Just-- I went off on her, and I haven't seen her yet to apologize. And yes, it has to do with Michael." She hugged herself. "I'll tell you the whole thing later, but for now? Zero told me something I didn't want to hear about him."

"Oh, god," Angela says, her hand over her mouth. "I'm so sorry, Parker. I remember when I found out about Marty's old job. I think I cried for about a day. And at least he told me, I didn't need to hear it from Veronica Mars or something."

She puts a hand on Parker's arm. "Why do people at this school have so many fucking secrets?"

"I think they put it on the enrollment form. Alien? Magic? Secrets? And if you can't check at least one, you have to do extra activities to graduate." Parker pushed her hair behind her ears, and shrugged. "Zero and Janet were right to tell me. Michael wouldn't have, and I needed to know. It was just a shock, and--" She shook her head, expression miserable. "We're definitely not going to the Mediterranean for New Year's, I'll tell you that much. You're lucky. At least Marty's secret wasn't about *you*."

Angela shudders, pulling her sweater more tightly against herself. "That would definitely have been worse," she agrees.

She lowers her voice. "Look, I'm not going to ask you to tell me anything you aren't, like, ready to tell me. But I really hate that things are bad for you, and I'm here if you wanna talk."

"Thanks." Parker smiled tightly. "Later. Much later. There will probably be alcohol involved. And you'll definitely be invited."

"It sounds like we'll need it, and thanks." Angela says.

She goes to sort through some new books, keeping wary eyes on Rory and Parker.
