The Library Is Open (12/05/05)

Janet unlocks the library and flips on the lights.

Sitting on the Collections Desk is a package addressed to "Adam Pierson." The envelope is embossed with an unusual symbol, the meaning of which Janet didn't know. ~~Except she did, because she steamed open the last envelope that came with that symbol on it. But she couldn't do that to this package without getting caught.~~ And that was really starting to bug her.

She moved the package behind the Collections Desk and glared at it until the first library patron showed up.

Parker looked up, and smiled very slightly. "Uh. Fine. Happy Monday. Adama brought cookies, want some?"

"Sure," Angela says. "What kind?"

"Frosted with decorations. And non-traditional colors," she added. "Although, anything that doesn't make me float or sparkle is a plus."

Angela reaches into the box of cookies and takes a pink-and-orange frosted candy cane. "Yummy," she says, her mouth full. "And yeah. The sparkling thing was kind of cool, but I'm glad it wore off as fast as it did."

She swallows. "So ELizabeth Weir is a friend of you and Janet, right? I hadn't really talked to her before yesterday. She seems really cool. Mature in a good way."

"Liz?" asked Janet. "Yeah, we room together. And we're pretty close." She didn't blink at the comment about Liz's maturity. "She's a pretty serious kind of person."

Parker darts Janet a quick look, then nods to Angela. "Yes. I like her a lot, actually. She's one of the sane ones on Student Council, and she's nice, as well." She smiled slightly. "She took the floating and sparkling pretty well."

"She had smart stuff to say about my parents, anyhow," Angela says. "Which was nice, 'cause I really haven't been talking about that mess and she barely knows me. And I was all sparkly, too."

She brushes cookie crumbs off her sweater. "I should hang out with you guys more."

"Mess with your parents?" Parker asks, pushing the fruit-and-cheese-and-goody basket at Angela. "Here, C.J. brought it in, we might as well share."

She smiled slightly. "We have the best cookies and treats, if nothing else. And you're certainly welcome." She cocked her head, thinking. "Has Blank talked to you about our idea for the Investigator's Club?" She made a face. "Which, actually, I have to talk to Zero about, otherwise it won't work."

Angela takes a few grapes and a bit of cheddar from the basket. "They got separated back in October," she explains. "I mean, it's a big deal, but so much else has been going on that I've mostly been obsessing about it on my own time. Just don't ask about my dad's girlfriend."

"And Marty said nothing to me about the investigator's club. What's up?"

"We were thinking that we needed to form something like the opposite of the JA. Even though Junior Achievers seems to be breaking down without their fearsome leader, some of those guys are still dangerous." Parker shook her head. "And you, Marty and I did okay this time, but some other time? We might need more help. So. Investigator's Club, since Zero is already examining gremlins and researching weirdness. If she's okay with it."

"And I'm sorry about your parents. And the girlfriend." Parker bit her lip. "I'd feel pretty odd if my dad started dating anyone else too."

"I went to a couple meetings of Zero's club," Angela says. "It seems like we could absolutely use her on our side." She chews a thumbnail. "This is going to sound so bizarre, but ... if we do it, do you think Anakin Skywalker might want to be a, like, double agent? He is such a nice guy and he keeps hanging out with JA people. Plus, he can do cool stuff with his mind."

She gives Parker a sidelong look. "Thanks. She's probably not, like, objectively that awful, just kind of obnoxious. I just don't get why he would choose her over my mom."

"Men are weird," Parker says, her tone flat. "Although I think fathers should be required to be exempt from that."

"About Skywalker-- maybe? Rory likes him, and if they're still up to messing around with people, a guy who can make glitter float would be good to have on our side." Parker thinks. "Let me talk to Zero about the club first, then if you check with Marty and Rory and they think Skywalker's a good idea, sure. I don't know him that well."

"I usually only see him in Deep Thoughts, 'cause I need my weekly dose of emo." Angela rolls her eyes at herself, but only a little. After all, she only speaks the truth. "I think he's pretty close to Rory, though. I'll check with her after you've talked to Zero."

Parker smirks a little. "Okay. I'll check with Zero sometime today, if I can." She hesitates. "I have to tell you-- this club was Mr. Souled Vamp's idea. He'll probably be part of it. Marty and I want to keep an eye on him. If you don't want in because of that, it's okay."

Angela hesitates. "I don't know," she says. "I mean, I talked to him a few days after the souling, but I've been able to avoid him since. I honestly have no idea if I'd be okay with being in a room with him."

"I guess I could come and see how it is. I mean, if you and Marty and Zero are in on it, I feel pretty safe."

"Thanks. I think," Parker said, her lips twitching. "And I'll give you plenty of warning, so you know when to expect him." She sighed, stretching her neck. "If Rory comes in, we were going to tell her she's the new last library aide. We might take her into Special Collections tomorrow or Wednesday. Would you want to come with us?"

"As long as we don't go back to the part with the books that don't exist and the soft places again, absolutely. We should probably let it get used to me anyhow."

"Liz is great with people. We actually went to the same school in Colorado, but I never really met her until we both transferred here. I'm pretty lucky to room with her."

"You do need to hang out with us more. We went for coffee at the start of the semester, but that was all about Paige and one of her boytoys. You know, you can stop by our room any time. We usually have junk food around--and I keep sandwich stuff around too, because I'm not touching the cafeteria with a ten foot pole."

"You avouid the cafeteria too? Marty kept going in there and having weird stuff happen. I think the ABBA-singing finally weaned him. I kind of live off muffins from the Perk and whatever I can scrounge," Angela admits. "So a new scrounging site is absoutely cool. I'll stop by your room sometime."

"Cool," said Janet. "So how are you liking the library assistant job?"

"It's busier here than I expected," Angela says, scratching her nose thoughtfully. "And I really like being here. I'm just not really sure what my job is yet, y'know? I guess I'll work it out while we go."

"And you've captured the essence of our jobs," said Janet, snickering. "You know how I got the job? I saw our so-called Fearless Leader sneaking away from the crowds on the second day of school, so I came in, stood on the Collections Desk, and shouted everyone into order."

Janet snickered. "It was pretty fun."

"That's awesome," Angela says. "I would never have managed that." She thinks. "Y'know, for ethics class, we're supposed to, like, change patterns we don't like in our behavior. Maybe I should try to be more .... forceful, or something."

"Being forceful can be fun," said Janet ~~who didn't get this yesterday, damn it.~~
