The Library Is Open (12/05/05)

Janet unlocks the library and flips on the lights.

Sitting on the Collections Desk is a package addressed to "Adam Pierson." The envelope is embossed with an unusual symbol, the meaning of which Janet didn't know. Except she did, because she steamed open the last envelope that came with that symbol on it. But she couldn't do that to this package without getting caught. And that was really starting to bug her.

She moved the package behind the Collections Desk and glared at it until the first library patron showed up.

Callisto stalks into the library and starts looking through the shelves.

"Callisto? Looking for something in particular?" Parker asks, wandering by to shelve a few books.

"Mechanical repair. That toaster's going down, even if I have to learn it all from scratch."

"Oooo. No problem, hang on, let me find you the manuals," Parker says, dumping her books at the end of an aisle. She looks it up quickly in the card catalog, and says, "Small appliance repair, 643.6. So. The stupid thing got to you too, did it? I tried to drown it, but I could hear it gabbering away this morning again."

"Oh, it's got a friend now." Callisto muttered something under her breath which sounded a lot like "Stupid vampire."

"Faaaabulous," Parker drawled. "Let me know if you need a screwdriver. I'll tell Broots to give you his."

"Thanks for the offer, but I was thinking something more along the lines of a, say, sledgehammer."

"For that, you don't need a maintenance repair manual," Parker said dryly. "But if you can talk Zero out of her mallet for a while, I'm sure that'll work too. What did the stupid toaster say this time?"

"The repair manual's so I know what needs to be destroyed beyond all hope of repair." Callisto suddenly started to turn a bit pink around the ears. "Oh, y'know, same kind of drivel it usually spouts."

"Ah." Parker raised her eyebrows, and said, "It was trying to fix me up with Crichton, last week. Which, totally aside from Sun killing me, is so ridiculous I drowned that sucker. Pity it's undead or immortal or whatever."

"Set you up with Crichton you say?" Callisto scratched at her neck. "Yeah, undead, immortal things are annoying."
