The Library is Open (11/30/05)

The librarian looks roughly like he's been run over by a truck. And not in a fun way.

He is Not In A Good Mood. Wise students will look out.

"The Library left a contract and a pen out when no one else was around, Zero didn't know any better-- hell, none of us did-- and she signed it." Parker sighed. "When we re-read the fine print, there were several more... conditions to it. But it is useful for figuring out what the Library is going to do. It wants coffee, snark, and efficiency, and it doesn't mind protecting us if we give it what it wants."

They are just about to exit the stacks--

--when the bookcase moves, blocking their path.

Another moves.

And another.

They can still see the doors through the cracks in the books, but-- not how to get out.

Angela takes a deep breath, momentarily panicked, then centers herself. I started today getting engaged to a toaster, right?

"This is going to sound crazy," she says to Parker. "But -- " she turns to face the blocking bookcase. "Shelves, would you please let us out? Thank you."

The shelves remain immobile for a moment, then--

they shift, and re-shift, and re-align themselves perpendicular to the door, clearly leaving a space to walk out of Special Collections.

Parker laughs, relieved, then grins at Angela. "That *is* the easiest way to do it. Sometimes it doesn't work," she says, holding the door open for Angela, "but that's usually when a book is in the wrong place. I killed the best part of an hour, once, trying to find the *one* book that was in the wrong section. They wouldn't let me out until then."

She strips off her gloves and puts them in the trash can. "But it let you go! So I'd say Special Collections likes you. Still want to work here?"

Angela echoes Parker's motions in throwing out her gloves.
"This was the most fun I've had in a while," Angela admits, grinning. "Really freaking strange, but way fun. So if Special Collections is okay with it? I'd love to work here."

"Thanks for the tour."

"Welcome to the Library, Chase." Parker grins. "And I'll buy you a drink at Caritas tonight to celebrate."

"Cool," Angela says. "I have to go to newspaper and Chaucer's class, so ... catch up with you after 8? Is that okay?"

"No problem. I'll yell down the hall when I'm ready."
