The classroom is empty. There is a sign hanging from the moosehead and there is a folded piece of paper in the moose's mouth. The sign reads:

WORK PERIOD FOR YOUR PROJECT.
I WANT A REPORT ON YOUR PROGRESS NEXT CLASS.

ANGEL, YOU WILL FIND YOUR
ESSAY TOPIC IN MOOSEJAW.

I MADE A FUNNY.

The folded paper simply reads, "Women. Discuss."

Whe he says that, the last bits of wall that is holding her temper in shatters.

"You bastard," she snarls as she draws back her fist and swings it at his face. The blow doesn't land as her arm is caught and pulled back. Phoebe turns to see Cole holding her arm to keep her from swinging at Angel.

Angel out of his chair to keep himself out of range of Phoebe's blow. Again his glance flickered in Bel's direction. He looked as though there was a lot he wanted to say, but wasn't.

Finally he settled on, "I'm not your enemy, Phoebe."

Cole kept his hands on Phoebe's upper arms, his touch gentle but firm. "Don't, sweetheart," he murmured. "He's not worth it." He looked at Angel coldly, as if he was barely keeping his own emotions in check.

Phoebe looks from Cole and then back to Angel.

"I don't understand," she says. "Angelus, you killed my friend and attacked another one. How can you not be my enemy?"

Angel grimaced. "Angel. My name is Angel. And I meant now. I didn't come here to fight with you. But if you want to hate me and never trust me again, I can't argue that."

Phoebe is so very confused.

"So, what Angela told me, about the soul...it changed you?"

"Don't let that trick you, Phoebe," Cole said. "That's what he'd like you to believe. He really hasn't changed."

"You would know."

"Yeah, and you don't know anything."

"Well that's a theory," Angel replied.

Phoebe is watching and listening to all of this. She makes sure that she's firmly between the two angry demons. She has to protect Cole. She looks at Angel for a long time.

"How can I know you're not the same guy and aren't just waiting for my guard to come down so you have a snack?"

Angel shrugged. "You don't."

"Because he knows if he touches you he'll be a pile of ashes," Cole growled.

Phoebe looks back at Cole and then looks to Angel.

"You're not friends any longer?"

"He wants to kill me, so I'd say no," Cole said.

"He wants to desoul me so ditto."

"I made a promise to you," Cole said. "Free you or stake you. Your choice, but I have to keep it."

Phoebe is now really confused and she glares at Angel.

"Why do you want to kill Cole? He's done nothing but be a friend to you up until now."

Angel was this close to rolling his eyes. "I don't want to kill Cole." There was a hint of emphasis on the name that he used. "But if he tries to desoul me I'm going to have to try to stop him. Otherwise I will start killing people and that's obviously something we'd like to avoid."

She looks at Angel with curious eyes. "The soul keeps you from killing?"

She tilts her head back to look at Cole for a long moment and then she turns back to look at Angel.

"Isn't almost impossible for a soul to be removed?"

"Not totally impossible," Angel said. "And without the soul there's nothing to stop me from killing."

Phoebe looks at him calmly. "With a soul you won't kill anyonw else...or do I always have to be on guard to protect my friends and Cole from you or your anger?"

"I never killed out of anger," Angel said. "I killed because I liked it. Because it gave me pleasure. Because sometimes it was even funny. But not now."

Phoebe looks at him calmly.

"So, if I came to you for help on something and I was alone, you wouldn't hurt me?"

It's obvious that she's trying to feel out the situation. Angelus had hurt a lot of people, but he had also been good to her when they talked. She was trying to see how this version of him was different.

"No," Angel said. "I wouldn't hurt you."
