Parker waves to him from down the counter, still looking up anti-vampire stuff on the internet.

"Yes, of course. Still, it gives me ideas of new places to look. And some of them refer to scholarly journals that I can at least order." Parker looks depressed. "I'm trying to find something to make Rory feel better."

Are we talkin' emotionally, or is there somethin' wrong with her still?

"Emotionally. She's just really shook up." Parker makes a face. "Which is not unreasonable, given what happened. I spent last night watching movies with her in the clinic until she fell asleep, fairly late in the evening." She sighed. "I had to be the one to tell her Angel-us-what's-his-face is still here. Stupid Dean didn't send anyone to tell her, and she missed the announcements."

How much squallin' longer is she stuck there? Is she gonna be there over Turkey Day?

"The doctors said she'll probably get out tomorrow night, if she keeps recovering like she is. I think Echolls gets out at the same time." Parker growls at the computer, then pounds the mouse, and finally calms down. "I'm trying to find anything about keeping vampires out, once they've been invited in. So far, no luck."

"You need to keep vampires that have been invited in out of your place?" asks Jenny. "Sorry, couldn't help but overhear. There's a Romany spell for that. It's fairly obscure, but I've got a copy of it."

Parker's head whips around, and she almost squeals. "Yes! I mean, thank you, Miss Calendar, that would be awesome. I was never stupid enough to invite one in, but a couple friends were, and are regretting it." She raises her eyebrows and looks surprised. "Do you know Romany?"

Jenny looks very, very amused. "Sure. Got any large wooden crosses and braids of garlic bulbs?"

She hadn't thought about what it would mean if she offered help. It's not like hiding it got you anywhere last time, Janna. "I am Romany, Parker. How come? Got any texts no one can read?" That wasn't going to be a problem any more. The elders had made sure of that.

"Crosses, yes. And we can raid the cafeteria for the garlic. If it isn't cooked yet, the Chef can't mess it up. I hope." Parker grins, then looks intrigued. "Well, we *did*. We finally found a really obscure translation, but wow, it would've been nice to have you here last week. Or a month earlier. Or, you know, two months ago...."

"You found a translation of a Romany document?" asks Jenny disbelievingly. Then she realizes what Parker must be talking about, given how few written texts her people have--and why she's here. "You mean the Rituals of the Undead? Talk about obscure."

"Cooked garlic doesn't work so well for spells," says Jenny. "A nice marinara sauce, maybe, but that doesn't keep vampires away."

"Most of it wasn't here, in this world, it was a couple dimensions over. Did you know we have extra-dimensional internet?" Parker asks. "It's great for finding out information, not so great for verifying it, though. And trying to get anything mailed here is a bitch."

She looks briefly embarassed, then adds, "I don't understand half of it, but my friend Broots set up my computer to work on it. And yeah, it was the Rituals of the Undead. Mr. Phale, in town, had a copy of a book that had that one in it. I think it was the *only* one in the whole shop, everything else was just anthropology on Gypsies. Or Romany. Well, both. I'm not clear on the difference, and neither were most of the anthropologists."

"Extra-dimensional internet?" asks Jenny. "Oh, yeah, I knew. Now there's a job benefit."

Jenny grins. "Yeah, I know. Poor saps. They just keep trying and trying. So this Mr. Phale. How's he able to get his hands on one of the rarest, most obscure texts out there?" One that no one outside the clan was supposed to be in possession of.

"Uhhhh...." Parker looks cautious. "He's kind of -- different. Yes. Not human, to start, and anything else I'd say, you probably wouldn't believe. But I think he's a really good guy. He has a lot of contacts." She frowns. "Be careful of his buddy Crowley though. That guy gives me the creeps."

Jenny shrugs and shakes her head, looking bemused. "Not human? Okay, then. I guess I have to meet him for myself. The shop's in town, you say?"

"Yes. Phale's Books. It's right next to Championship Vinyl." Parker's wince is very minute. "He doesn't keep very regular hours, but he's open most days well into the evening. Also? Great muffins."
