Methos steps out of Special Collections with a bemused look on his face. Under one arm is a book. In the other hand is a creature that appears to be... on fire. He looks up and meets Janet's eyes. "It's not a newt. It's a salamander."
Methos smiles at seeing his boyfriend Ten, and holds up the salamander. "Salamander. Lives in fire. I, uh, don't know why it's not burning my hand. I do know that creatures that live in fire probably shouldn't live in a library. Books, paper, etc."
[Ten runs a hand through his hair, making it more mussed up than it already is, and ventures a bit closer, squinting at the salamander.] Oh no. So what are you going to do with the wee bastard? [He looks up at Methos.] And how did it take you nearly a week to catch it?
I don't know. I suppose he... she... it could be a pet. [Methos frowns at it thoughtfully.] Nearly a week? Hardly. I first saw it this morning when I went in to shelve books.
You'd have to keep it in a glass terrarium or something. [Then he pauses and stares at Methos.] Adam...it's the 16th. You've been gone for ages. We've been worried sick. I was just about to go in and look for you.
[It's obvious that Ten's now trying to work out the temporal effects that could allow such an occurrence, and failing miserably.]
Hey. [Methos puts down the book and steps to Ten's side, putting the hand not holding the salamander on his arm.] I'm sorry. I... didn't mean to be gone so long? At least this time I don't have to beg candy bars off of you, right?
[Ten smiles slightly. He's a touch embarrassed.] I know you didn't. We were just worried. [a pause] ...you were missed.
But it's good you don't require candy bar sustenance. I don't have any on me. though apparently I'm getting lollipops (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomtherapy/12620.html?thread=1161804#t1161804).
"I have no earthly idea." Methos bends his head and examines the creature curled up lazily on his palm. It's glowing with heat, and little bitty red flames curl around its toes. "It makes no sense."
"It's so cute," says Janet, peering at the salamander. "I think we need a mascot. But what does it eat?" She goes back to the Collections Desk to look up salamanders, or magical creatures, or something useful. "And will it grow any bigger?"
"I have no idea what it eats. It didn't seem to be chewing on paper, just singeing it. As for size... he looks fully-grown for a normal salamander... but, not normal here."
"No cigarettes for you," Methos says automatically. "Even if little Sally Mander here is the best cigarette lighter in existance. And I don't know. I think she's a little too... red to be Professor Gandalf. Maybe she ate him?"

I'll be in my bunk.No such luck, I'm afraid. [Methos holds up the book he's carrying. It has little scorched marks on it.]

I'll meet you there in five minutes.[Ten runs a hand through his hair, making it more mussed up than it already is, and ventures a bit closer, squinting at the salamander.] Oh no. So what are you going to do with the wee bastard? [He looks up at Methos.] And how did it take you nearly a week to catch it?
