"Today's topic is power and responsibility, and I would like to remind you all that your grade comes from your discussion, not your presence. If you don't feel comfortable talking, write something down and hand it in to me. Being a silent warm body in the classroom is no different than not turning up."

[ooc: And I would remind you that I leave posts open for the whole week. If you post 'shows up and takes a seat' I know you're still alive, but you need to actually address the discussion topics to pass the class.]

"Okay, now let's take a different viewpoint. What right do you have to save anyone? Without their express, explicit permission, how can you be sure you're doing the right thing? I'd like you to split up into pairs. One of you is going to play the hero, the other is going to be a rescuee who didn't want to be rescued - you can choose why. Talk it out, and then switch places. I'll give you 45 minutes, and then you'll report back to the group.

Please note that I don't actually expect you to roleplay out the situation. What I want is for you to discuss the consequences for the unwilling rescuee, and the implications of that for each party."

Jonathan sees Angela lookiing for a partner and heads over.

"Need a partner?" he asks.

Angela considers for a minute and decides her risk of getting hit with fear gas in the middle of class are nonexistent.

"Sure. You're Jonathan, right? I think you did the master/slave thing with my roommate."

Jonathan smiles at her, "that's me, and your Angela, Martin Blank's girlfriend right?

So, you want to be the damsel or the hero?"

"That's me," Angela says, a little worried. But it doesn't seem like whatever is going on between Marty and Jonathan is being taken out on her.

"Can I be the hero? I'm kind of sick of getting rescued."

"So what are you rescuing me from?"

Xander snerks. "Nobody appreciates the irony of me giving advice on talking to chicks more than I do, but maybe next time you wanna try that with a little less emphasis on the if. Like 'obviously there's no better choice than you, Insert Name of Girl Here.' - "

He raises an eyebrow. "Only you actually say the name. The 'Insert Here' thing doesn't go over well."

Shane glances around to see if there's anyone without a partner, silently hoping that her miniature implosion wouldn't put any of the other students off, since she's normally very quiet and calm.

Xander turns to her and winks. "Obviously there's no better choice than you, Ins-- er, Shane."

Grinning, Shane drums her pen on her desk. "Obviously," she murmurs, eyes twinkling with amusement. "Wanna give this a try anyway, though?"

"Sure." Xander nods. "You wanna argue for the rescuer, or the Eee? I've probably got more experience with the second one, myself, but it's hard to think of a time when I didn't want to be rescued."

"I don't really have much experience with either of them," Shane says with a slight shrug. Her eyes wander over in Angelus' direction for a moment and then she glances back at Xander and grins. "But... where I come from, there aren't real vampires, either."

"Most people where I come from don't realize there's real vampires," Xander points out. "And wouldn't believe you if you told them. Which makes most people a hell of a lot more likely to need rescuing if they run across one." He frowns, thinking. "Ok, so I'm Buffy. I'm shorter, blonder, and more boobified, and I'm the one girl in every generation born with the strength and skill to blah blah blah that ends with 'dead vampires.' I see you being attacked by one - or at least I think that's what's happening - and I stake it. Why wouldn't you want that?"

She walked over to the quiet boy sitting alone.

"Do you need a partner?"
