Philosophy classroom: Ethics class #4, Monday, 2-4pm

"Today's topic is power and responsibility, and I would like to remind you all that your grade comes from your discussion, not your presence. If you don't feel comfortable talking, write something down and hand it in to me. Being a silent warm body in the classroom is no different than not turning up."

[ooc: And I would remind you that I leave posts open for the whole week. If you post 'shows up and takes a seat' I know you're still alive, but you need to actually address the discussion topics to pass the class.]

"I love that," Angela laughs. "Okay, I'm superwoman and I see a man on fire and swoop in to put him out with my ... fire-quencing power ... and I just ruined the day and wasted a bunch of money."

She thinks. "I guess if I could defend myself, I would say that I had no way of knowing it was a stunt."

"And I could argue that maybe you could have asked, or taken a little extra time to see the cameras. Because even if they were pretty visible it's unlikely you would have seen them in the split seconds you had to act.

And I could sue you, for making me look unprofessional. And you'd have to find a stylish yet practical powersuit that matched you cape."

"And I could point out that if someone was on fire, taking extra time to look for cameras could mean the difference between alive and dead. And that even if I did notice the cameras, there are probably people in this world who would set someone on fire and film it for fun -- I mean, you just have to look at what happened to Kitty to see what kind of sickos are out there."

"I could sue you back and argue that by performing the stunt in public, you were taking on the risk that someone might believe it was real, and that you and the production company should have notified the appropriate authorities. Because you didn't do that, you made me take on the risk of putting the fire out -- plus, I probably made the news for saving someone who didn't need to be saved, and that just ruins a superhero's reputation."

Jonathan laughs at how ridiculous the idea of suig a superhero is, "But then, then I can say that Superheroes think they can do whatever they want and all they are are a bunch of vigilantes and that they need laws put on them. Or something.

I can't believe I'm suing Superwoman, I'm going straight to hell."

"And then I'd have to point out how many people superheroes had saved in the last year," Angela tells him. "And then ... we'd probably, like, settle out of court, and I'd get bitter about the whole thing, and when I was supposed to save someone and didn't it would be all your fault. So you are going to hell."

She seems to find the prospect of him going to hell very amusing.

"Okay, so you're now a bitter superhero with a tarnished reputation and I'm a relatively well off ingrate that's going to hell... what was the assignment again?"

"I'm ... not actually sure," Angela says. She checks the assignment sheet. I think we did it. Unless you want to trade places and have me be the victim for a while, or you can think of other implications in the stuntman/superhero thing."

"Ours was so good though, do you think we'd be able to top stuntman that get's rescued midshoot?" he asks her.

Angela considers this. "Nah. I think we're good. I guess we just wait for Ms. Maclay to call on us."
