Angelus is inside, looking as though there's a great deal on his mind and as though there's a high likelihood that his distraction has something to do with the travel plans that are scattered across his desk (anyone peeking would see London, Paris, and Rome listed on his notes). On Dr. Carter's desk is a box of fudge nut brownies from Deb's. The door to the classroom is wide open.

"Everyone's seething, but, what, she was walking by herself? At night? In a town with zombie attacks and other sorts of funness? Some friends. I don't even know if I'm thinking of the right kid, but wasn't she youngish?"

Faith facepalmed. "Us versus them? Great. I love those sorts of fun school-wide bonding events."

"Yup. A 14 yr old kid, out after dark, in a town where it's pretty goddamn common for people to disappear without a trace, a month after a zombie invasion.. yeah. Brilliant girl, that."

Duce grimaces, "Hopefully, it won't get as bad.. "

Faith let out something between a snort and a single laugh. "Yeah, right. Here's hoping that the Keystone PD out there actually does something about it before we get to the 'accusing any student who's ever killed someone' stage."

"That," Duce answers quietly, "would probably be most of us, Faith. Those that have, those that could.. what they'll be looking for is who had the motive and who had the opportunity."

"What would the motive be?" Angelus asked. "Hell, I even liked her. Far as I know she didn't have any secret hobbies of baby-stabbing or wearing white after Labor Day. She was just a normal fourteen year old. Well, besides the dragon and being a mutant part."

"All sorts of motives here. Discount the mutant part for a moment," Duce looks at Angelus levelly, "Normal 14 year old girl, small for her age, out after dark in a bad part of town. If you can't think of at least 40 different types of bad people who'd want a piece of that action, you're slipping in your old age." Duce sighs, "Add in the mutant part.. and you add a whole 'nother set of classes of bad guys. So let's start with that. She had a dragon, but strange pets only mean she's not from this earth-prime. How open was it that she was a mutant? How often did she do things openly that displayed that? How likely is it that this is a factor at all?"

Duce rubs the bridge of her nose, "I don't envy the people doing this investigation. I sincerely fucking do not."

"No kidding," Angelus said. "About the only guess I could make is maybe the people she hung out with made her a target. She was close friends with Phoebe. Hell, maybe somebody saw her hanging around me once too often. We all know how many good friends I've got around here."

Duce smiles tiredly, "No offense, bubeleh, but if hanging around with you too often is enough to make someone a target, there are other people who hang around you more often - why hit Kitty?" She adds quietly, "And if they wanted to get to you.. they couldn't possibly have known you'd care."

She changes the subject, trying to eliminate the time in which Angelus could either think about that last statement or get defensive about it. "Phoebe? Why the fuck would being friends with Phebes make someone a target? She's so.. nice."

Angelus gave a grimace, glancing in Bel's direction to subtly indicate to Duce who was tying his hands, communication-wise. "I'm not at full liberty to say. But suffice it to say for a while there it looked like some folks weren't thrilled about having a witch for SC President."

"You can see why Veronica's article can't come soon enough," Angelus met Faith's eyes. "You know what names are going to go up on the list if anybody starts looking at people's pasts to find out where a 'killer' label would apply."

Faith's eyes went cold. "Yeah, well here's hoping it doesn't get that far. The last thing I need is anyone asking around about me- especially since some of our fabulous schoolmates know my past in detail."

Duce shakes her head, "At least your past isn't immortalized in works currently on the English curriculum." She pushes a snake off her face absently, "The 'killer' shoe fits entirely too many feet. Without a body, they have no method, with no method, they can't narrow it down. Shit, we have a known assassin here at school. Too many places to point the finger, so they won't be doing it until they can narrow it down."

She mutters, "They'll just do stuff in the name of 'for your protection' until then and drive us all stark, raving mad."

Faith stared at Duce for a moment. "You're that... oh, things make much more sense. Just cause they shouldn't point the finger doesn't mean they won't. And I really wouldn't appreciate a thorough background check, even if it isn't done in an accusing manner."

Faith rolls her eyes. "And, of course, the stuff won't even make much of a difference, because people will either rebel or something'll fall through the cracks. Excellent."

Duce's mouth quirks in a wry smile, "Yes." Her voice takes on an inhuman, multi-tonal timbre, sounding both hollow and choral at the same time, "We are the Medusa, gorgon scourge of Ancient Greece. Whore of the gods, slayer of men."

Her voice returns to normal as she adds, "And currently stuck reliving puberty and highschool. Fucking. Sucks."

Duce smiles slightly, "We have one thing working in our favour. The school's recording system. I'd be willing to bet a shiny that the administration is pouring over every recording for the time period surrounding Kitty's dissappearing act and noting which students were on campus. You live in the dorms, right? If you were home that night, you're golden."

She points out, "Kitty disappeared in town. Not here. They have no reason to suspect a student. None of us had any motive or reason - that I know of, anyway - to hurt Kitty. More likely, it was an adult predator. It does seem suspicious that the hotel owner and the brothel owner disappeared right around the same time, doesn't it?"

Faith raised her eyebrows. "Impressive. And also: incredibly sucktastic."

"As far as the security tapes go, that's good. I don't remember what I was doing Thursday, but I'm pretty sure it was boring and here." Faith nodded. "And it's wicked suspicious that they left like that."

Duce considers something for a moment, and adds quietly, "You know Bagoas? Student here, oh so pretty, hangs out with that Han Solo kid like he's glued to him? He used to work for the madam that skipped town. Obviously she doesn't have a problem employing minors... or rather, boys who *look* like minors."

She shrugs, "There are a lot of possibilities. So far, none of them are pretty. And apparently there's only her dragon's word for what happened."

"Duce, you're pretty rules-savvy," Angelus said, looking at her curiously. "Is it even possible to kill in Fandom Town? I thought they had spells or the Townie version of Rover or some crap."

"As far as I know, it's possible to kill in town. The cops.. the ones I've seen.. are all normal humans. The town is like fucking Pleasantville..." Duce thinks about it for a moment, "However, that doesn't mean there's not a system in place. Not having attempted to murder anyone, I couldn't say whether it has a way to prevent murder. So it might. But you'll have noticed that the incidents of aggression are low, even for a town this size. I'd originally suspected some sort of pacifying drug in the water."

She doesn't sound entirely like she's joking.

Faith makes a face. "Nothing preventing beating the crap out of people, at least as far as I've noticed. And some people get into pretty bad fights, and no rovery things showed up."

She appears to seriously consider the drinking water idea.

Duce shakes her head, "Rover's only allowed to patrol the school grounds proper, or to handle situations with students in town - but even then, he has to be called. Town has police."

"I figured there had to be something," Angelus said. "As many violent types live in that place? But as you say, not like I ever checked. I just assumed that if killing was possible we'd already be seeing stacks of bodies everywhere. You can't tell me everybody in town has good impulse control. Besides, they're allowed to have weapons."

Duce shrugs, "No clue. It is a pretty small island, and everyone's got their nose in everyone else's business all the time, but still." She smirks slightly, "The arguement could be made that the very fact they're going around armed and there is such a low murder rate is a testiment of the general population's impulse control.."

"I'll admit this is not the news that would normally have me leaving town," Angelus said. "My stupid player just had to schedule her trip for this week, damn it I don't like not being able to be here and watch the investigation. Last thing we need is some well-intentioned citizen claiming they found wood splinters or a barbeque fork at the scene of the crime."
