Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Oz was not alone at the front of the Danger Shop (which today resembled a weird hybrid between a kitchen and a laboratory). With him he had a bald, glasses wearing man in chef whites.

"Hey kids. Now one of the more important life skills we're going to cover in this class is cooking, and while I could easily cover this myself, I figured that something so vital needs an expert to help out, so I'd like you to meet my buddy Heston here. He's not the real version, but he'll do. He's going to take you through a few simple recipies. So pair up and put your aprons on."

[Go for it]

Rebecca sized people up, trying to determine who looked potentially good at this stuff.

Or just who looked hot enough that she didn't care. Same thing.

"I so don't cook," Juliet informed Rebecca in a murmur. Which was perhaps less a request for partnership than a warning.

"Like I do?" Spoiled rich girls for the win. "This had better not be messy."

"I like this top," Juliet agreed, nodding as she looked down at herself.

She bit a fingernail thoughtfully as she surveyed the cooking stations, trying to figure out which one seemed easiest. "I could try the mousse (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3019670.html?thread=187602838#t187602838). If it goes wrong, it's still chocolate."

Rebecca sighed. "Yeah, okay," she said. "Let's give it a shot (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3019670.html?thread=187608470#t187608470)."

Hmm. Who to cook with, who to cook with? Decisions.

Thaaaaaaaaat was going to be kind of a tough one, eh, Steph?

"Would you like to pair up?" Rilla offered.

"Sure, why not?" Stephanie cracked her knuckles (a little showily, granted) and smiled. "How good are you at cooking and is this going to be totally embarrassing for me if I end up, like, setting my own hair on fire?"

Note how she'd made sure to only specify setting her own hair on fire, even though the potential for collateral damage was definitely there.

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've gotten better," Rilla said stoutly, "but I'm afraid cream puffs and such escape me."

Honesty compelled her to add, "And sometimes I mistake salt for sugar."

"Well, little white granules, who can tell, anyway?" Stephanie asked, waving a hand. "It's only if you tell me that making pancakes is a challenge that I'm going to worry about this."

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not that bad," Rilla said, "though crepes are a different story."

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oooh, with the super super thinness and all? That would crepe me out." Stephanie was physically incapable of avoiding a pun. "Now, what are our choices here?"

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Rilla looked around. "Looks like something with chocolate, something with ice cream, and something...fizzy. Is it supposed to be fizzy?"

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"No idea," Stephanie admitted. "But fizzy usually equals fun. Wanna try for that one? Because if we're doing this it might as well be fun."

The cooking wouldn't be so bad if it was just Britta failing, but of course they had to pair up. Britta was going to look like she was above any of this, mostly because she didn't know who to pair up with.

"Cooking," she commisserated for anyone who would listen. " What is this, home ec?"

And then a light sparked in Britta's eyes and her jaw dropped as she realized that this class basically was home ec, just with a less obvious or gender demeaning name.

"...those jags!"

...

"Jags?" Was that a new recipe? Rapunzel liked learning new recipes!

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," said Britta, shrugging. "You know, like jackasses, but....politer."

Speaking of polite, she did manage to take an eyeful of the other girl without making any comments, and there were definitely quite a few that came to mind, so she should be applauded for her efforts.

"I just figured out that this class is probably basically home ec, just wrapped in a much more politically correct wrapping paper. I should have known better, really. Maybe they'll at least throw in a unit on changing a tire, just to balance it out, you know?"

Britta's eyes then went back to traveling over the hair, because how long did it take to manage that in the morning? Britta spent almost an hour oh-so-slightly curling her own hair every morning, she couldn't imagine what it would be like for all of that.

"Home ec?"

Rapunzel did not know what she was probably about to unleash...

"Home economics?" Britta tried. "Domestication of the female species 101? How to Program your Stepford Femmebot?"

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much all of that went right over Rapunzel's head.

Except the word home. That one was easy, though.

She looked a bit worried, because Britta made this all sound terribly important. Which meant Rapunzel should already know it. But she didn't. "I'm afraid I don't know anything about that."

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Good!" said Britta emphatically. "Let's hope it stays that way. If anyone tries to indoctrinate you with the misogynistic fantasies of the patriarchal mandate, you can stand up tall and let them know that you're your own woman and you don't need to fit their standards of femininity to be a kick-ass person. They can take their...." She took a moment to look over at one of their recipes, "fizzy black currant sorbet and shove it right where the sun doesn't shine, sister."

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Rapunzel blinked. "That sounds uncomfortable."

"And like a waste of... sorbet?" Whatever that was.

Re: Pair up! - ES [02]

[identity profile] shestheworst.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Britta considered that part.

"Well, it's more of a metaphor, really," she offered. "There are starving children in Ethiopia, so I really wouldn't support a superfluous waste of food like that."

"I'm Britta, by the way," she added, wondering if that little speech might help win her points in deciding to just not do the assignment at all.

Richie wasn't going to poison anyone, at least. The food might not be edible if it was something too fancy, but it wouldn't kill anybody.

But maybe, he thought as he looked around for a potential partner, there was somebody else here who could do better.
