Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Oz was not alone at the front of the Danger Shop (which today resembled a weird hybrid between a kitchen and a laboratory). With him he had a bald, glasses wearing man in chef whites.

"Hey kids. Now one of the more important life skills we're going to cover in this class is cooking, and while I could easily cover this myself, I figured that something so vital needs an expert to help out, so I'd like you to meet my buddy Heston here. He's not the real version, but he'll do. He's going to take you through a few simple recipies. So pair up and put your aprons on."

[Go for it]

Rapunzel blinked. "That sounds uncomfortable."

"And like a waste of... sorbet?" Whatever that was.

Britta considered that part.

"Well, it's more of a metaphor, really," she offered. "There are starving children in Ethiopia, so I really wouldn't support a superfluous waste of food like that."

"I'm Britta, by the way," she added, wondering if that little speech might help win her points in deciding to just not do the assignment at all.

"There are?" Rapunzel asked, eyes widening. That was worrying!

But, Britta had introduced herself, and it was only polite to return that.

"Oh, and I'm Rapunzel." She managed a bright, friendly smile. "It's very nice to meet you!"

"There are millions of people all over the world who don't have enough food to eat," Britta confirmed with a nod. "Makes sitting here in class making chocolate mousse and bacon and eggs ice cream seem like a big fat waste of time, doesn't it?"

"I don't know..." Rapunzel pursed her lips thoughtfully.

"I mean... we still have to eat, don't we?" Even if it was super-sad that not everyone could, and Rapunzel's smile was probably going to be a bit less bright for the remainder of the day whenever she was reminded of it.

"I think," said Britta, nodding her head a little as if this thought she was going to propose was something she'd been considering all week, and not just something she was deciding right then and there, "I'm going to go on a hunger strike this week. Sure, we have to eat, but not to the excess that we do! We live like gluttonous pigs while others starve! It isn't fair! So I'm going to share in their plight. Nothing but the bare essentials for the next week. One can never understand another's suffering until they've walked a mile in their shoes, right, Rapunzel?"

"Really?" Rapunzel perked up a bit. "I wouldn't know, I didn't even have any shoes until last semester." So she was kind of new to any and all truisms about them. Other than that they kept your feet warm when it was cold. That was nice!

"Really?" asked britta, newly intrigued. "So you know what it's like not to have things."

Unlike Britta.

But she looked at Rapunzel very solemnly, hands folded in front of her to show how grave and serious she was. "Just so you know," she said, "my hunger strike means having to refuse to do this assignment on principal. A failing grade for the class is a small price to pay to bring awareness to the world about starvation. You might want to find another partner."

"Unless," she added, oh-so-subtly, "you want to join me in standing up against inequality."

Uh-oh... this one was hard

On the one hand, Rapunzel really, really liked cooking. And learning! And she didn't want Oz to get angry with her.

On the other hand, Rapunzel really, really liked making new friends. And doing things with them! And she didn't want Britta to be angry with her.

She clasped and unclasped her hands together anxiously in front of her as she tried to come up with the right answer.

There was a little bit of a pause.

"No pressure, or anything," Britta added after a moment, her eyebrows lifted expectantly as she awaited Rapunzel's response. "I'd completely understand. Hey, you didn't have shoes. I think that gives you a get-out-of-jail free card on at least one hunger strike."

"What if... what if I only made the food, but didn't eat any?"

That might be a fair compromise, right?

"Well, someone's got to eat the food if it's made," Britta pointed out. "Otherwise, making food and not eating it is like...like...spitting in the face of all those Ethiopian kids. Or spitting on their poor, malnourished extended bellies."

"Oh!" Rapunzel clapped her hand over her mouth in distress. "I didn't think of that!"
