Anakin still thought that getting sent off to school at some place he'd never heard of (and he'd been trying to memorize star maps practically since he was old enough to read) was one of Uncle Luke's stranger decisions. He'd graduated from the Academy, he wasn't a little kid any more, but as his uncle's apprentice he didn't have much room to argue. He'd much rather have been back in the thick of things if it were up to him, but it wasn't and Luke had sent him here, so he'd trust Luke's judgment even if he didn't understand it. Sending him to Dantooine with Aunt Mara had been weird at the time, too, and turned out to be a valuable learning experience.

The large Fandom High banner in the Portalocity lounge left little doubt that he was in the right place. With a tiny sigh, Anakin set his single bag down on the floor, tugged at the hem of his tunic. and brushed his fingertips against the hilt of the lightsaber hanging from his belt. That, at least, was something familiar in a completely unfamiliar environment.

He never liked waiting around for things to happen, but since he couldn't be home helping the Jedi with the war effort waiting for the shuttle to show up was the only thing to do right now. Well, that and finding out what the other new students would be like, and he supposed that part would happen soon enough.

Loki looked up just long enough to take in everything visible about the boy and dismiss him as unimportant in the grand scheme of things. "I think I would prefer to play from the pigs' perspective," Loki replied. "It's less challenging this way."

Jim considered that for a moment, and then glanced at the screen again.

"The pigs are the green things, right? What do they do?"

It kind of looked like they were just sitting there, to him.

"They stole the birds' eggs, so the birds have responded with attempted genocide." A beat. "All in all, not a terrible game."

"No? And that's on the... phone, right?" Stan had managed to teach Jim some things over the summer! "Maybe I'll have to get my hands on a copy of that when we get to the island."

And then, a moment later, whether Loki cared or not, he added, "I'm Jim. Hey."

The Starktech phone, Jim. Which made it fancier.

"Loki," he replied after a moment. Then stared as if to figure out why he was being spoken to.

"Good to meet you, Loki," Jim replied, smiling a little. Hey, the kid wasn't so great with people. He was fine with that. "You're new to this school, I'm guessing?"

Like everyone else here but you, Jim? Yes. Yes, you were the only kid insane enough to come back.

"And you're not." Thank you for that, Loki. "You don't know who I am."

"Uh... should I?"

Sorry, Loki. Jim might have belonged to the parent company that owned you, but that wasn't quite the same as 616.

"I'm from... kind of far out of town, though. And not all that big on... pop culture?"

He was trying, Loki. He really was.

Loki just grinned, putting the phone away. "Never mind," Loki assured him. "Where are you from then?"

Tell hiiiiim.

Don't do it, Jim!

"Montressor," he said, ignoring the narrative because he was a moron like that. "It's a planet pretty far from here. I wouldn't be surprised if you've never heard of it."

After all, nobody else here ever seemed to.

"No, I haven't spent too much time on Midgard," Loki assured him. "Other than Broxton."

Which didn't count, people.

"Midgard?"

That was not a name for Earth that he'd heard, all that much.

"I don't think I've heard of that place, either," he offered, apologetically.

Because he wasn't Norse.

"Earth," Loki corrected. "Of a sort."

Look, you try explaining the 9 realms to a novice.

"Oh." A beat. "So it's a different kind of Earth?"

Jim could... kind of grasp logic like that, if that was the case. After all, he'd spent a summer on Fandom Island already.

There had been pop tarts. Horrifying ones.

"There are more kinds than you can hope to fathom."

Yes, this was even coming from someone from Marvel.

How fitting!

"Well, I'll try to fathom the ones I come across, at least," Jim decided, grinning a little. "And then maybe a few on the side. Understanding can't hurt all that much, anyhow."

Right?

"You're very wrong about that," Loki assured him kindly. "Nevertheless, it can't harm you too much to know, I suppose."

Maybe.

Perhaps!

"Well... I think I'd sooner know as much as I can than go around ignorant of everything," Jim offered. "Last time I went to Fandom, it was kind of an accomplishment when I learned what 9-1-1 was."

... Which was just sad.

"...You didn't know numbers?"

Did you think they had that in Asgard? Really?

"... What, like counting? I can count just fine," Jim replied, blinking. "9-1-1 is a... It's a phone thing."

You know. Like that Starktech in your hands there, Loki.

"If there's an emergency, you dial 9-1-1 and... I guess someone comes if someone's hurt or something? I'm not totally sure. The deep fryer didn't actually explode that one time."

"Ah." He'd have to keep that in mind. "I'm sure it's very important for you."

"... Not really. I've never had to use it before," Jim admitted. "I mean, not that I've never been hurt before, but it hasn't been bad enough that I need to hit numbers and hope somebody shows up, or something."

Which, considering his vehicle of choice was a flying surfboard, was kind of impressive.

"You could always give it a try when you're not injured to see what happens," Loki suggested. Because he was the best person for advice, Jim. Really.

"You mean, just dial the number anyhow, to find out?"

Don't tempt him, Loki!
