Ethics [Tuesday, December 6, 2011, 1st period]

Anakin was in the classroom early today with a clingy, fussy Juliet. Despite his best efforts, he kept looking out the window at the swirling blackness that was far too close.

When the students arrived, he was blunt: "There's very little point to pretending that you're going to be able to concentrate on anything remotely course-related today. I was a student here myself and know how stress relief around here goes: the library's open, and so is the gym, the salle, and the gun range. Don't do anything stupid. If you're not sure what you're planning is stupid, ask yourself if it's something I'd do."

And if it was, it was probably kind of stupid.

"And then don't do it. You can stay here as long as you'd like, talk to me or each other, or just be quiet. I know I'd rather not be alone right now myself."

Not that he could be with a two-year old attached to his knees.

"So... why aren't people out kicking these Auditor things' butts?" Hank had to ask. "Are we waiting for their archenemy to have the first go at 'em?"

Mercy... didn't know what to do and she didn't have anywhere to go, so she just... stayed.

Topher didn't really feel like going anywhere else, so he stuck around, playing a game on his phone and occasionally glancing up from it to see what people were doing.

Richie didn't have anywhere else to be right now. Possibly ever. He'll just be over here trying to act like it's no big thing. Really.

Or cry on him, like Juliet preferred.

Oddly enough, Jaina had sort of noticed what was going on. The thing was, normally if she saw some kind of problem, or there was an invasion, she'd just go ahead and get out the old lightsaber and make the problem go away the best she could.

She still couldn't do that now. It was the most frustrating thing.

"So I guess we probably wouldn't have needed that alert system after all," she greeted him.

Anakin glanced out the window again. "Not really," he agreed. "I have no idea what Cable's doing, but I'm glad it seems to be working."

He left the "for now" off of the sentence. If Jaina was following his thoughts, she'd know it too, and if it hadn't occurred to her, well, no reason to add more stress to an already ridiculous situation.

"Any ideas?" she asked. "Because I'm at a loss on this one."

Was this the first time she'd ever actually asked for his opinion on something like this? Look who was growing as a person!

"Me too," Anakin admitted. "I actually put 'auditors' into a Google search last night."

"Let me guess, a lot of depressing tax stuff and H&R Block ads?" Not that she'd Googled it. But she could assume.

"Pretty much," Anakin said. "Certainly nothing about weather-related things."

"I'm not sure I would call this weather," she said slowly. "I know we need to figure out more about these auditor things, but right now I'm more concerned with the, uh. Non-weather... thing. And of course no one's found anything on that that I've heard."

"I think if anyone had found something useful, they'd be screaming it from the dorm roof by now," Anakin said. "Assuming that didn't get them too close to the forcefield."

"I need to do something," Jaina said. "Standing around and waiting for someone to discover just the right thing isn't going to work for me."

This tended to be a problem when you were way more of a fighter than a researcher.

"If you go out and try to poke a lightsaber through the forcefield, I will kick you," Anakin promised, "but I understand the frustration. We have a lot of kids here who are scared and unable to do anything. We need to find an outlet to channel that energy that isn't them drinking at Caritas."

"Like making sure they know the gym and shooting range are open?" she asked.

Anakin nodded. "I mentioned that when I started class today. I'd rather them use that energy productively and hope that eventually something will come that we can hit."

"Not a bad idea," she said. "And it's hard to punch things and worry at the same time." She would know.

Anakin's lips quirked up. "As our family knows well." He reached down to pick Juliet up. "Though she's a little young yet for sparring, I think."

"Are you sure? Jacen was her age when he first used a lightsaber..." While totally serious about that, she was kidding about Juliet doing it.

Anakin snorted. "Rory would kill me."

"Probably. Besides, X-wing first, right, Juliet?"

What, she was trying to at least get the two-year-old thinking about something else.

"FLY!" Juliet confirmed, clapping her hands. "NOW?"

"When we fix this, we'll see about flying," Jaina told her.

Juliet seemed to mull that over. "Fix," she repeated. "Tape? Batteries?"

Those fixed most things!

While those weren't actually going to work- probably- but amazingly the toddler was the one to come up with the first try at a solution that Jaina had heard. Go, Juliet!

"Could reinforce the forcefield with duct tape," Jaina said, shrugging. And totally not serious because getting too close to those was generally bad.

Juliet nodded solemnly before yanking on Anakin's robe. "Daddy. Get tape!"

"If tape actually works, we're all going to feel pretty stupid," he commented.

"Something tells me we won't have that problem," she said. "So if you're up for it, you can track down enough duct tape to cover the entire island, and I'm gonna head to the gym. Maybe people will actually show."

"Batteries too!" Juliet reminded them and Anakin couldn't help but chuckle. "I might stop by later," he said.

"Then I might see you there," Jaina said, even smiling a little before waving to Juliet and turning towards the door.

Why can't elves come over and decorate my house for me?

I will totally come over to decorate. Be there in like six hours.
